Mays coached the last the last four seasons in a wheel chair following a hunting accident on Dec. 31, 2008.

“A lot of people from Shepherd and other places were surprised I was going back to work full-time,” Mays said in an August 2009.... “But it never crossed my mind once not to come back. My goal is coming all the way back."

“Some people said I should retire and go on disability. Well, you’re disabled when you think you’re disabled. That’s the last thing I think I am. When you start thinking that way, you give up.”
