SC ties NC in Shrine Bowl

Post by 1 CAT FAN »

Dillon's Jackie Hayes, head coach of the South Carolina squad faced off with favorite North Carolina. After two years of Tar Heel victories, the South Carolina Sandlappers broke the streak. Sort of.
Saturday’s Shrine Bowl ended in a 10-10 tie between South Carolina and North Carolina in the 82nd annual game. It was the first time the game ended in a tie since a 7-7 tie in 1948. The Sandlappers opened the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter from Davis Beville (Greenville) to Quendarius Jefferson (Hillcrest). The Tar Heels hit back a few drives later with a 61-yard touchdown run from Zonovan Knight. North Carolina led 10-7 after a field goal from Matthew Chmil.
A 25-yard field by Michael Hayes (West Florence) tied the game with two minutes remaining.
Defense ruled the day on both sides. A blocked punt by Shamar McCollum (Dillon) gave South Carolina prime field position with five minutes remaining, but the drive ended with Hayes’ (West Florence) game-tying field goal.
South Carolina commit and South Carolina Mr. Football Zacch Pickens (T.L. Hanna) was named Defensive MVP of the game. He recorded seven tackles.
South Carolina stopped North Carolina in the red zone twice during the second half. A late heave by Beville (Greenville) on the last possession of the game went incomplete and the game ended in a tie.
