Let me be honest, even if honesty ticks some folks off. There are too many thugs in too many of South Carolina’s towns and cities and they keep growing in number. Meanwhile, grown men capable of serving as coaches an mentors and reaching said ***** and turning them around through football and other sports seem to be decreasing in number. It doesn’t bode well for our future here in the state.
I have experience on this. I went into Marlboro County to teach science back in 2002. I tried to introduce those poor kids there with street tendencies and gang aspirations a better way of life. I really wanted to try and help them. But I failed miserably. It was pretty much hate at first sight for many of those kids when I showed up. I finally gave up in the spring of 2006...one might say they ran me out of the area. I then got into the Nuke field a little later and found it much more suitable for me. I guess it’s fair to say that I don’t know how to reach these kids. When I did practice teaching at Dorman and Byrnes I was liked by the students who came from similar backgrounds as me. By they hated me in Marlboro County...all those kidsclaimed to be Bloods or Crips and they DID NOT want to change!

They're reachable. But you have to have an understanding of their viewpoint and why they have that viewpoint before you can reach them. They have to feel like you aren't the enemy pretty much. They have to feel like you actually do care about them. It's not easy, but some folks have the gift. What's the saying? People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Or something like that, lol. Kudos to you for at least trying.NuclearCav90 wrote:Let me be honest, even if honesty ticks some folks off. They absolutely can be reached. Like I said earlier in this thread, Emerald had a young coach that any of those kids (Bloods, Crips, what have you) would run through a brick wall for because they apparently trusted him and believed in him.eagle93 wrote:They're reachable. I've been following that program since the Frank Hill days and I'd never seen anything like it. He had a literal army of "bad" kids that were cornerstone pieces of the program that would pile into his truck after practice. That program took a clear step back when he left a few seasons ago.

Let me eat my crow. Greenwood shocked me tonight. Pippin has found an identity in Greenwood football. The question is.....will he stay this way or revert back to his old ways???
