I think the best option would be have a re-alignment that is for football and a second one for all other sports.
Size matters more in football, but not so much in most of the other sports. So have a REGION set up for football and then another set up for everything else. The trips on Friday night for football do not seem to be a HUGE issue but a softball or baseball team playing on Tuesday doesn't need to have a long ride home.
So make it work for each situation.

Re: The best options for Re-Alignment
You bring up a valid point.
I think a lot of times when discussing realignment and region changes, most everybody tends to look at things through a football lens. I really do hope geography is made a point of emphasis in the next realignment. Not sure if two different sets of regions is the answer, but maybe it could.
I give you the current AAAA Region 6.
Hartsville
Wilson
Darlington
Marlboro County
North Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach
The Pee Dee schools basically have a 4 hour round trip every time they have to go to the beach, and the opposite is also true. That might be ok for football friday nights, but it's pretty brutal for the sports that don't always play on Fridays (Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball etc)
There are many other examples throughout the state similar to this one, but this region is one that stands out the most to me when discussing the issue of travel times.

Re: The best options for Re-Alignment
Do like Union. Beg to move down one class to play. Then brag about beating the smaller teams.
Re: The best options for Re-Alignment
Union would do fine in 4A. And their complaint isnt about football. It's like an above poster referred to. It's about the volleyball team, tennis, etc., having to go through afternoon rush hour in Spartanburg and Greenville to go play at TR on a Tuesday night. Unions would do just fine in football in 4A.

I like the idea but it won't work because it makes to much sense and the SCHSL doesn't have the common sense to see it

Could have easily put Union in South Pointe’s RegionDeputy wrote:Union would do fine in 4A. And their complaint isnt about football. It's like an above poster referred to. Great idea.......wish that I had thought of it. Oh yeah, i did, a month ago. Everyone thinks that you are a bloody genius and I am the stupidest thing since the pet rock. Seriously though, that is the answer to the problem.

Re: The best options for Re-Alignment
lol Penguin, this idea has been talked about since the days of the big 16, and yes it is the way to go, but I doubt the high school league will ever do it
Re: The best options for Re-Alignment
I would never say never. But it would work, with 5 classes for football.Onion Rings wrote:lol Penguin, this idea has been talked about since the days of the big 16, and yes it is the way to go, but I doubt the high school league will ever do it
2000 students & up-5A
400 students or less-1A
The rest divided as equally as possible into 2A, 3A, and 4A
Go back to an 11 game season for 5A schools without allowing games against smaller schools. Those schools should generate enough gate money to be able to travel from Pickens to May River to North Myrtle Beach, and any place in between. have a 16 team playoff at the end of the year.
For all other sports, no class designations as those sports do not have teams large enough for enrollment to be a major factor. I offer up Basketball as an example. Burke, one of the smallest schools in the state will anually have one of the most competitive teams in the state.
A solution to a problem, not a pipe dream. But alas, the SCHSL will probably never consider that option.
