There are a whole lot more positives than negatives I promise you.
We can agree to disagree here.

You don't understand the mindset of the student-athlete in the Greenwood area if you think these kids are going to be okay riding the pine or playing a very small role at a 5A school when they could be a starter at a 2A or 3A program.

You'll have more kids on the street up to no good if this gets put into place. That is a fact. The less fortunate ones aren't showing up to practice during the summer and after school in the fall just to say they are on the team. They want to play.

If that isn't an option for them, they'll find other ways to entertain themselves.

A lot of speculation up here that some Spartanburg area coaches are interested in heading west but from what we're hearing it's being pursued heavily by a coach from Columbia. This arrangement between Emerald and Greenwood is similar to what was mentioned by Reed Charpie at Brooklyn Cayce last month.

No, Emerald will stay as a high school. These schools can find football success with the right leadership which is in the works. Greenwood is a traditionally successful football town.

Not a good idea..especially since so many 5A and 4A schools are dropping 9th grade sports teams.

The district would lose so much money not utilizing the facilities at Emerald. Example: Football stadium, softball and baseball fields and the basketball gym.

No way the district would let that happen. They are having a hard enough time already finding teachers.

Genesis exists for a reason.

What Spartanburg coaches? Figure Shaw is happy at Byrnes. Gutshall and Miller are too close to retirement to care to move. Dont see Hodge leaving Chapman for anything other than maybe Gaffney, Spartanburg, or Dorman, when they open in the future. Adam's at Woodruff likes to jump around, but not sure Greenwoodbwould be as interested.
Interesting about a Columbia coach. I could see Parks wanting a stab at that job, though he has it pretty good at Ridge View.

I have had some association with a couple of schools with ninth grade academies. They normally have their own sports teams for freshmen only. JV is sophomores and any junior that the coaches assign. Ninth graders can place on the varsity teams.

I think it improves athletics because it allows for more development of the freshman and the ones that see they are going to struggle can look at other options.

I am not supporting consolidation just referencing what I know. I do think the structure is much better for students than going straight into the high school. Nice transitioning period when a lot of young people struggle.

High schools that start to go over about 1,800 students are going to lessen opportunities for the student that is average in certain offerings. High schools that start to drop below about 800 students often see academic offerings start to lessen unless the majority of students are very much alike academically and preferences. This is not a rule for all schools but a general observation.

First of all I am not aware of any mass exodus of any AAAA or AAAAA schools dropping 9th grade sports. There has been a lot of AAA and lower that has when it has come to football when the new rules were implemented a few years ago.

Your comments in regard to the offerings is point on. Thank you for your comments!

This is the High School Football section of this message board.

How might the changes affect High School Football (or athletics) at the school or the area? :?:

If people desire to take this topic in the direction it seems to be going...(not having to do with athletics)
Posts will be edited, deleted or the entire topic will be locked or removed.

If you desire to argue such things, there are a multitude of other websites those type issues can be addressed.

Thanks for posting at SCPrepTalk! :D
