Technically, yes. But when a RB drops a handoff without any contact, I wouldn't say the defense caused it. Gray had some good players, the RB was solid, but the game was never really in doubt. I don't think they had the ball once with an opportunity to take the lead in the second half. They were smart to stop kicking the ball deep for touchbacks, they knew Abbeville would have put together long drives against their defense and ran the clock down.Tjamal9106 wrote:Isn’t a fumble recover a defensive stop?bigdog2003 wrote:1 GCA td was set up by a Panther fumble in their own territory. Another drive was helped by an Abbeville player getting an unsportsmanlike for spiking the ball after a possible int was broken up by a GCA WR. GCA didn't stop Abbeville once the entire game.

If Gray could recruit some good defensive lineman they'd be pretty tough to beat. They lose the QB next year, not sure if the good RB is a senior or not. Despite going to class for only half a day and spending the rest of day conditioning and practicing, they showed no resistance to the Abbeville run game. Better luck next time, I guess.

Total yards were roughly 430-280 in favor of Atown. The Panthers were penalized heavily in 1st half...lost a sure td to some 15 yd penalty on play where we ran it to 1 yd line. Ended up missing fg. Up 21-6 we dropped the ball in backfield right before half that GCA capitalized on...with a 2 pt conversion also. That is a 15 swing caused by 2 plays...and we were driving for another score at end. GCA is a good team offensively but the game was closer than it really should have been. All that counts is that you win, sometimes have to overcome turnovers and penalties, which can make a game closer than it should be. We move on.
Re: Abbeville vs GCA
Looks like you were right. We were right on the cusp of the 5 straight....up 21-3 in the 3rd. I'm still fretting about this one. Not sure exactly what happened...but I would say the combination of turnovers, penalties, an unusually porous defense...and a great effort by Saluda did us in. And it took every bit of that to take us down. Saluda doesn't want to hear it...but the key moment in the game was with about 8 to go and we're still up 28-17...we make a nice interception only to get called for pass interference. That gives ball back to Saluda with 15 yds and first down. It was a bad, bad call. Unfortunate the ref made such a bad call at that time...difficult to figure what he was doing. Now before anyone starts saying you can't complain or blame officiating or whatever, I give full credit to Saluda for making plays, they still had to make plays, and to their credit, they did. I don't think we made another positive play the entire last 8 minutes of game on offense or defense. Saluda dominated that part of the game. Still, without that bad call, we probably win.nastycats1988 wrote:Barnwell and Timberland(We used to play them EVERY year) are two tough teams down in the lower state. Don't award the trophy to Abbeville just yet. There is ALWAYS something about a team trying to get that 5th straight. It ALWAYS seems like something gets in the way. When we were going for our 5th straight Chapman beat us. 5 straight has been LARGELY unobtainable throughout the years.

losing.Saluda will be down.Newberry will be 2a but they have
been down.Southside Christian is back in 1a.Barnwell has been
the best in the lower state the last couple of years but they just
could not matchup with the overall speed of Abbeville or Saluda.

Re: Abbeville vs GCA
Newberry should be a lot better this year. We started 4 sophomores on the oline. They got better as the season went on, but they should be better this year. The center was a first year starter, but he has the ability to be good. A lot of missed oppportunities last season. Had a chance to go into the half vs BC down 7 but gave up a long 4th down td right before the half, had a 14-0 lead on woodruff after 1 and where dominating them with I think 10-1 time of possession before the wheels fell off, spotted union 7 on a pick 6 our first offensive snap then fumbled twice inside the 10 in a 7 point loss. We had the smallest senior class I ever remember us having, I think we will be much improved this year.96fanatic wrote:unless there is a surprise team next year in 2a i don't see A-town*Topcat* wrote:Looks like you were right.
