Re: SC Prep Media Football Polls
The TOP FIVE in 5A are not a surprise to anyone who follows 5A football even just a little bit.
The rest of this list can open up quite a bit of a mess.
6 Riverside 6-0
37-0 W Blue Ridge (0-4) 3A
23-0 W Southside (0-5) 3A
40-7 W Eastside (1-4) 4A
48-18 W Berea (3-2) 3A
14-7 W J L Mann (0-4) 5A
42-20 W Travelers Rest (2-2) 4A
NOTHING on that list is remotely impressive so the only reason they are on the list is the "6-0" and no one bothered to look to see who the six were. Congratulations on the 6-0 and the impressive turn around from the past few seasons as in the past, Riverside would have been 3-3 or so with the same schedule. They are making progress; but to have them ranked ahead of Sumter is not realistic, and I personally would have them as a 14 point underdog to Mauldin, also ranked below them.
7 Dorman 2-2
42-20 W Ridge View (2-2) 5A
38-48 L Fort Dorchester (4-0) 5A
33-0 W Boiling Springs (0-5) 5A
7-20 L Clover (1-3) 5A
This to me is the Doctor Jeykell and Mr Hyde team. How did Clover beat Dorman 20-7 AT Dorman and haven't won another game? I saw the DOODLES numbers and Riverside by 3 and I said, "Well there is one of my Running with the Dogs picks!" Now Riverside may surprise me, and if they do, I will gladly tip my hat to the Warriors, but I'm thinking Dorman will win by a score like 38-14.
8 Sumter 3-1
33-14 W St James (2-1) 5A
36-7 W Carolina Forest (2-3) 5A
0-13 L A. C. Flora (4-0) 4A
55-18 W Lakewood (2-3) 3A
Sumter has experienced some COVID issues and the only real tough team they faced, they lost 13-0. Even with that, I see them as the Region VI Champion and that loss to A C Flora as the only loss they will have. I'd have to have them at #6 on my ballot.
9 Spring Valley 3-1
14-7 W South Pointe (3-1) 4A
15-28 L Carver, GA (4-1) Ga. 4A
33-10 W River Bluff (2-3) 5A
23-0 W White Knoll (1-4) 5A
The win over South Point got them on the ballot and I would have them on my ballot at 9 or possibly 8 at this point in the season.
10 Mauldin 4-1
58-7 W Boiling Springs (0-5) 5A
48-13 W Carolina (0-4) 3A
60-13 W Wade Hampton (0-5) 5A
21-24 L Greenville (5-1) 4A
41-21 W Woodruff (1-3) 3A
Granted, they have only faced one tough opponent {4A Greenville} and lost a tough one, but the offense has scored a lot of points while the defense has held the lesser opponents [3 winless teams] where they should have. I'd still make them a 14 point favorite over 6-0 Riverside. Now, a win over Hillcrest Friday would set up a visit to T L Hanna which will tell us all we need to know.
11 Chapin 4-1
28-50 L A C Flora (4-0) 4A
41-21 W Brookland Cayce (3-1) 3A
35-24 W Newberry (1-3) 2A
56-28 W Lugoff Elgin (0-4) 4A
46-26 W Mid Carolina (1-2) 3A
The 4-1 looks nice, but lesser talented opponents are score a lot of points, even 2A Newberry. I wouldn't have them on my ballot.
12 Lexington 4-0
27-24 W Irmo (1-2) 4A
41-14 W Airport (1-3) 4A
14-12 W Gilbert (4-1) 3A
42-33 W West Florence (4-1) 4A
Lexington at 4-0 hasn't happened in a while. Irmo [battle of the dam] is a big rivalry and a good win. The others are nice; I might have then at 10 this week.
13 Woodmont 4-1
33-51 L Easley (2-3) 4A
65-29 W Wade Hampton (0-5) 5A
28-8 W Palmetto (1-3) 3A
14-9 W Southside (0-5) 3A
57-27 W Blue Ridge (0-4) 3A
Another vote for a 4-1 record with no looking into the details.
14 Ridge View 2-2
20-42 L Dorman (2-2) 5A
18-28 L Gray Collegiate (4-1) 2A
29-19 W North Augusta (2-4) 4A
40-20 W Westwood (1-3) 4A
TOP TEN:
#1 Dutch Fork
#2 Fort Dorchester
#3 Gaffney
#4 Northwestern
#5 T L Hanna
#6 Sumter
#7 Mauldin
#8 Spring Valley
#9 Dorman
#10 Lexington
