I hate recruiting with a passion. It’s wrong. But you can’t let the charter schools like Grey collegiate get away with it. If you want recruiting then fine make it fair for all. It ruins the game. Yes you play for the school you live at, if you don’t want to then move. Greenvilles high coach Greg Porter has been recruiting since he was at Hillcrest. Every kid on his state title team in 2014 was recruited and every one will say it’s not recruiting it’s called bettering yourself. Call it what you want but it’s wrong. He’s been doing that crap for years at schools that aren’t private. I know a couple of his kids for a fact weren’t suppose to go to Greenville. Another part is its saying screw you to the head coach who would’ve had the athlete, what if that coach got fired? What if that kid could’ve helped make his season better? High school football isn’t about building a mega team it’s about taking the kids you got and developing them. Heck a 10 year old can get a team that recruits and win. It takes no skill of coaching to win by recruiting. A real coach develops his kids. The guy at wren has a new quarterback every year. I mean the one this year went to TL Hanna last year the one that won them state in 2019 started at Mauldin. Heck even Kelly Bryant started at Calhoun falls then transferred to wren. It’s wrong and selfish.DM59YJ wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 3:42 pmSo just to show that their is recruiting. How do you explain students getting letters when they are in middle school from these charter schools about coming to their school instead of the high school they are zoned to go to? Are they sending these letters out to everyone???? Are non-athletes getting the same opportunity to enroll at these schools?
Also how do you explain the coaches from charter schools, not going into high schools necessarily to recruit but going to middle school football and basketball games to recruit students before they hit high school?
These charter schools do not have a middle school that feeds into them so they are going and talking to kids at their middle school games as well as their parents about how they should go to the charter schools that are nearby. You may not call that recruiting because they are "simply putting the word out that there are other options" but that is indeed recruiting.

Re: Misinformation
Thank You for a very good post. Gray certainly has a different model then most of the charter schools. First let me say this, my kid went to a public school and had mostly a good experience. But the last two years became miserable for him. We moved him because of environment and better academics. We had to sacrifice money wise for it but it was the best decision for our family. The only thing that makes me laugh is all this recruiting stuff. The fact that some people on here think public schools don't recruit. Like you said Porter has been recruiting is butt off for years and that is why he went to GH ...its a magnet school. All public schools in major cities do it also. Whether its a change of address or open enrollment it happens everywhere. But it's comically to hear people say ..not my school. The rural schools don't get a lot or any because nobody is moving into those areas and that's not anyone's fault.ChristopEagles wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 5:07 pmI hate recruiting with a passion. Re: Misinformation
So with what you just said that schools in metro areas recruit that is all well and good. Some are better than others at it for sure. Parents should be able to move their child to improve their chances for sure, but that does not negate the statement you made about rural schools not having the same opportunities to "recruit".
So the schools that can cap their enrollment and only allow in athletes to their student bodies is that the same???? Should they be playing against teams that can not do the same thing???? Or should the schools that are allowed to pick and choose their student body be made to play with the schools that can do this as well???
In fairness to the smaller schools that have to use what they have in their attendance zones, because people are not moving there, be made to play against schools that either do not have a legitimate zone, because they are not apart of a district and can "recruit" players from an entire county.
I see the problem not so much of the they can recruit and kids should have the option to better themselves in athletics or academics, because they should be able to do that. Good programs do recruit players not necessarily in a going out and physically recruit them, but when families are looking to move and they want their kid to be apart of a great program that factors into the equation. The problem is the level playing field, why do you think IMG is not apart of the Florida league??? Because they are not on a level playing field with the rest of the public high schools.
This is not just a football problem, it is an all sport problem for these smaller schools. Either have a charter/private league or make all non-public schools that want to play in the SCHSL play classifications up.

Schools are failing for a variety of reasons, but leadership is a major factor. A school close by or not close by is a great success. Can I go to a better school to improve my situation?
programs are failing because there are not enough good coaches to go around. Very few coaches even know what they are doing, but they are making 60k-100k a year to fail at football. If this is your school, should the players be allowed to seek a better program? I say yes, you say no
coaches switch schools all the time to get a better situation. Players should be able to do the same. If you are a competent coach, with a good program, players will not leave
Why are "traditional" powers failing? Coaching
We've all seen how a competent coach can bring a team back pretty darn quick (Hodge at Spartanburg comes to mind). When you lock a player into a failing program a lot of times they just don't play
you and I don't see the same problem. Football is not failing in SC it is succeeding. The program "recruits" the player. These coaches are not going door to door looking for transfers. The players and parents are seeking them out to better their situation

Re: Misinformation
That statement completely contradicts your initial post. There are SEVERAL examples of prominent players leaving good programs to play for a private school. You need to objectively look around in the Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville areas before you make statements like these.mrfootballtalk wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 12:37 pmWELL SAID... This is not just a football problem, it's actually worse in other sports.

Re: Misinformation
Great post, spot on. Districts are well-defined for public schools. If a kid lives across the street from a district line, they will have to jump through some hoops to play in a district they literally live across the street from. That is definitely not going to be the case for these recruiting private schools and they know it. I wonder how much different things would look if a private school had a defined geographical area they had to draw from?DM59YJ wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 12:10 pmSo with what you just said that schools in metro areas recruit that is all well and good. Private schools can pick and choose both their students (athletes) and how many they allow to attend, essentially allowing them to drop down classifications as they please. For example, Southside Christian can't be Abbeville in 2A and see that another private school is having great success recruiting (Gray), so they drop to 1A to win two straight championships (Take a look at the margin of victory against 1A schools). I guess all those traditional powerhouse 1A schools have suddenly forgotten how to coach and play the game, oh well. Guess they should just give up.

Re: Misinformation
I agree with a lot you say except this part....
Making them play up just moves the problem from 2A to 3A, or 3A to 4A. And yes, bigger schools can better handle the issue but we saw first hand, Gray -vs- Gaffney, that is not the answer. In that game, the eventual 5A champion at home only won by a FG. So moving Gray from 2A to 3A wouldn't solve anything. Oceanside beat the Lower State 4A champion. This issue is only going to grow more and more and continue to expand to become a bigger and bigger problem.

Re: Misinformation
I can agree with you on that I would say play them all in the highest classification to be honest but even that is problematic. The main thing is what is happening right now is so far from a level playing field it’s crazy.Rebel-Fan-74 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 3:16 pmI agree with a lot you say except this part....

Re: Misinformation
OK, teams like Riverside and Wade Hampton for example, might not agree with your solution. They are already having enough trouble as it is, and you want to move more good teams into 5A. I'd be willing to bet that there are at least 75% of the teams in 5A that have no realistic chance of making it to the final four teams playing on Thanksgiving weekend already.DM59YJ wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 5:40 pmI can agree with you on that I would say play them all in the highest classification to be honest but even that is problematic.
