Another frustrating season for the Cavaliers will end in the next few weeks either in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs. It will end with a 5th loss on the season and by any measure another disappointing season.
For these keeping score at home, this will be the 8th time in 11 season that Dorman has lost 4 or more games and the 4th year in a row that Dorman has been putting up the pads before Thanksgiving.
I am not sure what the answer is from here. Clearly there are many questions that need to be answered. Why is discipline such a problem? Where is the passion and excitement? How far is Dorman going to fall behind their rivals? Where is the community support, Gaffney and SHS had 2 or 3 times the crowd at Byrnes than Dorman.
I am in no ways blaming the coaches or suggesting a change. That seems premature at this stage. But clearly there is an issue. How can you play your cross town in Week 10 and not even be competitive. The game was over after the first play from scrimmage. There did not seem to be a cohesive plan to stop the rush or any plan on how to move the offense. Mauldin scored 49 last week, Dorman score 14. It was simply embarrassing. More so when you are sitting in the middle of the reserved section on the Byrnes side.
I am not sure what the solution is. I am really not sure what the question is at this point. Dorman has been fortunate to have Gutshall for the past 20 years. I am never in favor of change for change's sake. But clearly minus the Peake, Humpheries,Thomas etc. years of 08 09 and 10, Dorman football has struggled.
Something has to reinvigorate the program. The program has become lathergic..........Go for it on freaking 4th down and a foot to put the game away and beat Gaffney. Make better red zone play calls, 5 times inside the 5 with no points....wow. Show up for 4 quarters. It is astounding to me that Dorman has played 10 games and really has not played a 4 quarter game of complete football this season.
I guess most teams would be happy with 7 or 8 wins every year and a win in the playoffs every now and then. But Dorman is the 2nd biggest school in the state, has plenty of $$$, has the best facilities in the state, a palace for a stadium and locker room and the best Athletic Program in the state most seasons.
I just hope 2014 is a better year because 13 has been disappointing.
Where does Dorman go from here ?

Sounds awfully familiar.for mywave realisticly we know we are going to the playoffs about every year but when will we actually compete with the top 5 schools.a realistic shot at a title. Again.one or two and done .we could use a rebuild from top to bottom.we still have plenty of talent.i feel your pain.

Re: Where does Dorman go from here ?
It seems like we are one of these teams like Gaffney that just lives and dies by the natural talent we have on the field. I'll say of course that if you go by fan chatter, our staff is more stable, more trusted, more consistent, and less controversial than Gaffneys staff. I only say this because we've all seen every year the disparaging remarks made by Gaffney fans about their coaches or assistants and you don't see this so much with the Dorman fans. Of course you have a coach coming up on his 20th year at Dorman who has the respect of most fans and most professionals in this state.
But still this program makes it tricky to be a great fan of it. Geez, 2010 was the last time I could log on at PFT and say to a Byrnes fan or Gaffney fan, "Hey great game. You have a good team. Sorry it didn't work out tonight for you guys. Best of luck next week."
I ain't whining but it'd be nice to have a little swagger again as a Dorman fan and not have to fall back on my good graces and charisma as something to be proud about.
I have two choices though. Either get involved and be part of the solution or just be patient. I don't wanna be like Sparty and simply be entitled to have my alma mater win titles.

Re: Where does Dorman go from here ?
I must say I started getting mad as I read the initial post. As I read, my anger at the poster turned into anger at the program. He is right. What is the deal? After the loss to Boiling Springs, Coach G told his team " you have no one to blame but yourselves". Really? Are you effin' kidding me? The red zone play calling and execution had been astoundingly bad. But the end of the BS game would have been so different if they would have gone for the first down (at the 8 yard line) instead of trying to hit JJ 4 times in the end zone.
Coach G is not a motivator. He doesn't encourage/know the name of anyone but the skill players. He says he is going to retire "when his wife retires". That is a reason to stay? Because his wife hasn't retired yet?
The Cavs can beat Lexington and Hillcrest if that is their draw. They can beat DF. They can beat Gaffney. Byrnes is another matter. Whether they WILL beat them remains to be seen.
Sorry Cav fans. I really feel that we are less than the sum of our parts, like MXDAD implied. And that is on the coach.

To be fair, there was a great deal of buzz for SHS returning miller to Nixon, thus a big visitor gate. Gaffney v Byrnes had all the makings of a blockbuster due to their duals of the last couple of years. The Dorman Game was forecast for rain from earlier in the week, and the lack of 2 of our top defenders probably decreased our chances. I heard our DE #84 ran down a back when the DBs gave up, caught him at the 5 yard line. #4 and #13 wouldn't have let that happen...
We need some more mojo. Where does that come from?

Re: Where does Dorman go from here ?
Well here's what I want to know...
When was the last time a Dorman QB called an audible at the line? It would seem this is not ever even considered as an option for development in our offense. I have no doubt that something like that is a monumental challenge and takes 11 smart and dedicated offensive players on the field at the same time. But what really stands in the way of that kind of opportunity? Smart, driven adults committed to getting our youth to that level, right? Who knows. Obviously it's possible to pull off.
OMG Dave, do you remember in the early 2000's when we could not get a play in to save our lives? I specifically remember after a big play the offense just stands on the field all of them looking at the sidelines with their hands in the air completely oblivious to what play to run next. We take the delay of game penalty and then guess what....
...we take a second delay of game penalty because we still can't get a play in. Who knows. Maybe the radios were buggy that year. At least we don't have that problem much anymore.
But back to the ability to audible. Heck I don't know a thing about calling plays and I can look at the field and know that a play that's about to run right into the teeth of the defense needs to be changed. But what does our offense do? They just hike the ball and give it to the guy like the lamb to the slaughter.
Eh. It doesn't take much to throw a game all out of whack though. My buddy pointed out that a few balls that hit the target instead of going over someone's head and a few balls that get caught instead of dropped and a few runs that break it all the way and all of a sudden our offense might look brilliant.
But yeah, as far as the passion and the execution and the discipline. We have to be in project status mode. If it ain't working I sure hope the program is putting things in place and trying to come up with solutions.
Maybe next year when one of our players gets arrested for smoking pot at a game, he'll actually bother to be watching the opponent we'll be playing that next Friday.
I do have to say though as far as the BS game. I'd have thought if you give us four shots from the 30 at JJ to win the game we'd win 5 out of 5 times. But on that drive there were some plays that did not make sense. When time is your enemy and you need to score to win, you don't throw to the ball to a WR 5 yards behind the line or try a reverse. But I'm not a coach. Oh well.
At this point during the last 3 years I always fall back on this insane desperately naive hope that our coaching staff is playing it close to the vest with a rope-a-dope strategy ready to unleash some whomp ass in the post season. A man can dream can't he?

Re: Where does Dorman go from here ?
I hate to say it, but Dorman needs to consider a coaching change to keep up with the Jones's. Miller is turning Spartan High around, Gaffney will always be good, Byrnes will always be good, and heck even Boiling Springs is a player now. Need to find some young guy who relates to the kids and gets them excited to play football. With the size of the school, no reason Dorman shouldnt be winning 10-12 games per year every year.

When you watch quality team/programs they all have some identity. For Byrnes is great offense/well prepared. Gaffney is great Defense/physical football. When I watch Dorman I am not sure what they are trying to be good at. I think when They lost their DC (coach smith I think) they seem to have lost some of their identity. Their D was very fundamentally sound. I think direction comes from the top. Either from themselves or hiring those that do have vision. Coach G's vision might be on retirement and not the next big thing for the program. Just my two cents.

Re: Where does Dorman go from here ?
I won't pretend to have any inside knowledge of the Dorman program, but I'll relay a complaint I heard from a couple Dorman fans. Both were parents of players. Apologies if anyone disagrees, but the complaint was that coach G wasn't interested in spending the time in the off-season to develop the QBs the way that Byrnes does. This complaint was made almost 10 years ago and reiterated several times since. I don't know if this is true or valid, or not.
Around that time, I thought the Gutshall and the staff at Dorman were the best in the area and made the best in-game adjustments of any staff in the upstate. Every yea,r I considered them the standard to compare Byrnes' staff to. Just based on the Dorman/Byrnes game every year, it appeared to me that Bentley started closing the gap and eventually surpassed Gutshall in play calling and in-game adjustments. I don't know the history of defensive coaches at Dorman, but that side of the ball had maintained until last year (which I considered an anomaly). After last week, I'm not sure the defensive play is a reflection of the talent of the players, stagnation of coaching, coaching turnover, a change in which offensive football is played, or a combination of the four. But, Dorman's offense seems more and more predictable. I have much respect for Gutshall looking in from the outside, but if I were a Dorman fan, I would be beyond frustrated watching this year's team every week. If LikeIseeIt is right and Gutshall is hanging on til retirement, it's time to make a change, now.

Re: Where does Dorman go from here ?
As a Hillcrest follower I've seen Dorman only once a year and don't follow them closely ther than to see their scores. My impression this year when they played at Hillcrest was 1. Not as athletic as years past 2. Ol/dl not as big as in the past 3. Pretty vanilla on offense.
They have 1 athlete that stood out #22. 200+ yards receiving vs HHS.
Sib,I beg to differ about your though beating HHS again. They had you in that game and got away with the bogus TD catch. Film showed his feet out by a yard. HHS also got hosed on 2 other calls that continued drives for Dorman.
But, as a rams fan we're basking in the glory of our region title and looking forward to HOME playoff football! Hope Dorman stays status quo....
