I think everyone tries to get the best players they can every year..of course it has problems. I think a lot of it falls on the SCHSL.. but I also think if a kid moves, he moves.
I called in on a show that I think you were a part of and told coach Bentley I hoped they won and asked if they were gonna return the favor and come to Duncan and he said EC coach said only if they won.
I remember watching the show about Valdosta..where a kid moved from California to Georgia during Covid and They wouldn't let him play for Rush.. but let him play for Grayson? Maybe.
The main reason I say I want In state teams to win is I think SCHSFB gets overlooked nationally. Do I like Dutch Fork No. Do I like Knotts, not personally but most of that stems from Independence.
I sat with Bobby at a Spartanburg Greenwood game one year.. we talked about Doc and football, he was scouting and still had time for a Viking fan.
I sat with Travis Jenkins and Drank beer and pulled for Byrnes as they embarrassed the team that chased rabbits thru the cane fields or whatever they kept bragging about.
I think Byrnes was just at the point where people didn't want to admit they were that good, and a kid might wanna go play there.
Allen Sitterle brought Chip Ferguson to Spartanburg in 1984?? Seems like Gutshall brought a kid to Dorman. Lord knows what has been going on at Summerville with all the purposely failing a grade to get an extra year and all those old tales.
It will cycle thru.. it always does. I bet Strait Herron up there at Kings Mountain has talked to a many a kid.
The part I hate is a generation thing.. I was a little kid, I mean 6 yrs old at Snyder Field dreaming of being a Viking. I hung to that fence like it was the be all end all. ..
Then years later, I got in trouble. I had to move. I would've had to play for Chris Miller at Broome. I was begged to play.
It wasn't even an option to my teenage brain...every Friday I got out of school and went to Spartanburg football games. It was a terrible decision in hindsight cause I missed out on something.
But leaving MY SCHOOL to play for another way unfathomable.
Kids don't grow up like that now.
They want to score 70, they want it fast and now.
I honestly have no idea what a 7 yr old thinks when they have a favorite player in a sport and he switched teams. Or a favorite team that doesn't resign your player because of money. .
I can't grasp it. Marcus Allen not with Raiders?? Jordan leaving Chicago? I would have been devastated.
I can't imagine growing up in a school district that would send me to Spring Valley then changing my loyalty when I turned 15??
I can only suspect those kids didn't go to Harry Perone every Fri.. the away games every Fri..
But that's just me.
Thanks for the reminder about EC.. that had slipped my mind. I hope u are doing well.
