SC Dept. of Ed. possibly taking over athletics

Post by Football Maniac »

Not trying to stir the pot, but how does everyone feel about the SC Dept. of Ed possibly taking over the SCHSL? I know that anytime someone discusses the SCHSL, it is a polarizing topic. And my belief is that it would be a complete train wreck if it happens. If they don’t hire people with a background in HS and even MS Athletics, they won’t have a clue about anything.

Very true! I have a feeling the charter schools will get a lot of breaks.

In the Midlands, look what the SCHSL Appellate Board did with the new charter school in Lexington. They allowed them to claim an attendance zone there aren’t even in so it would bring down their numbers in the multiplier. And they claimed during the Region appeals that they are not like Gray, but that sure does make it look like they are.

So, how bad do you think they screw it up?

At this point I’m not sure it matters. The genie is completely out of the bottle. Everybody wants to blame the charters and private schools for recruiting, but the public schools are just as bad. Anybody who thinks Watson at Mann suddenly built a program is terribly naive. Recruiting in high school now means almost as much as it means in college. And any body in Columbia is powerless to do anything about it

Been going on for decades .I don't have a issue with it.but I think if you transfer extenuating circumstances aside you stay two years or end of career on the HS level.

As for dept of ed taking over lol that's laughable.
We need a restructuring of our current system but that ain't the answer .landscape of HS athletics has and is changing rapidly we need to keep up.

Anything the state department does is not in the best interest of students period. Also, where do you think most of those beurocrats kids go? It sure ain't Columbia High School. We will see even more leaning towards private and charter

Exactly, the new charter school in Lexington was able to get the League’s Appellate committee to allow them to be considered in a different attendance zone rather than the one the school is actually located in. It makes zero sense in my opinion. They claimed that they are not like Gray Collegiate, but appealing to the league to get into another attendance zone sure seems like they are trying to get a competitive advantage so they won’t get hit by the multiplier.
