How did Hillcrest get so good?

Post by Big C »

This is the same Hillcrest that not long ago was a perrenial laughingstock. How did they all of a sudden turn things around? This is a doubly impressive feat since it is so hard for a Greenville County school to win!

When you have a large enrollment, it is amazing what a good coach can do.

So I guess through all these years Hillcrest has never had a good coach before now. Kind of like Dorman before Gutshall I guess, although Lou Fogle did have some decent seasons in the 70s and early 80s (yep, I am no spring chicken). BTW, The Rams have not beaten Dorman in 19 tries since a win in the schools' first meeting since 1971 (the year before I was born), even though Dorman has had some mediocre years.

I think you are seeing an effect coming from BMW too.

I'd be very interested in how BMW is helping anyone, especially Hillcrest in football....

Just like Boeing in charleston. An influx of new employees moving their family to the area, and they pick an area to live. Simpsonville isn't now benefitting from that.

I think that area is smart enough to build roads .down here they won't or are too stupid.

I don't think Simpsonville got any real influx from BMW, but they did get a coach who has invested quite heavily in things, not just meeting the team in August to see what he has.... He is working year round, strength and conditioning, and he even has to cut the grass {welcome to Greenville County}.

While there may have been some increase in population due to BMW, it has not been in Hillcrest. Most of the BMW workers are former cotton mill workers, etc from places that closed in this area. We were in bad shape until those jobs opened. Folks were leaving the area, now they have something to keep them here. Not only BMW, but the places that support BMW. Vendors have warehouses in the area, and there are vendors who have small operations here as well.... take bulk supplies and make "kits" that are sent to BMW.
