North Carolina debating getting rid of their version of the SCHSL

Maybe I am not understanding what he was trying to say, but my take on it was that Schools that outperform their Class by enrollment numbers, such as Abbeville, could be moved up in classification until such time as they can no longer compete at the next level, while those that underproduce, like Riverside, should be moved down in classification until such time as they become over competitive in the new classification.

Something very similar was proposed to,or by, I forget, this last re-alignment. All this would happen while trying to maintain Regions in close proxemity. This could produce a much more balanced slate of Classifications in just a few short years. I feel certain that this would have to be used for Football only as other sports are far more evenly matched due to the number of athletes required for other sports.

I have to admit that I like this proposal because of the higher number of competitive games. Less chalk, and less games decided on paper before the game is even played. Kind of like the lower number of playoff teams. Better games and an overall better spectator experience.

Gaining a bit more clarity but I have another question, After a realignment due to lack of competitiveness could a school still petition to move up or down in classification due to distance of travel? Also at what point in the decision of realignment are other sports beyond football taken into consideration since they won't do a realignment for football only?

I don't see them ever doing this for many reasons. But if it were to be instituted, it would have to be Football only. All other sports would remain as set by natural realignment. In High School athletics, Football is the skinless cat. The one everyone sees. It is also the big money maker for schools. Travel expenses become a problem with minor sports. May even have to start playing on Saturday nights to enable the added travel times that will inevitably result.

I don't think that anyone here, like the idea or not, who actually thinks that there is any chance of such a proposal being enacted.

But who here wouldn't love to see Abbeville playing Daniel on a yearly basis? How about Chapman playing Dillon every season? There is definitely a lot to like about the idea.

Another school from the Upstate that comes to mind when we talk about football only is JL Mann. They are like the Wando of the North. They play great in just about every other sport except football. That is where the problem with realignment comes in. Can you really do a realignment based on only one sport? Tough call for the school and fan base.
