Re: Question for the board...
Peterson was drafted in the 1st round of the mlb draft, but that was his only choice. Did not graduate because of attendance. As talented a player as has ever played in this state and still pretty unknown

Didn't Jones go back and play at William Penn or some small school for a while?

Said he played at Pikeville too. Looks like he went back to school a little later. Not sure.

Yes Kentrell attended both.and done fairly well at WP....but Gaffney High school and Montgomery let Kentrell down...He could not read when he graduated..He came to work as a temp at the plant where I worked bought 10 or so years ago..it was very temporary ..he just couldn't pick up on basic skills..it was sad..kid could have been a great baseball player as well from seeing him in youth leagues..But in title town..He will always be a Legend..

Re: Question for the board...
Reminds me of a RB at Dorman many years ago. I saw him and was very impressed and asked a co-worker about potential offers and he said, "Oh you don't have to worry about his SAT score... boy can't spell SAT!"
I love high school football but we need to remember what the primary function of high school is. Preparing these young men for their future is much more important.
Personally, I'd love to see a few more classes added to the high school load:
.......How does a loan work, for a car, a house, credit cards, etc.
.......Introduction to Income Tax, who files, basics of deductions, etc.
.......What is a 401K, IRA, other investment options

Those things are in place. SCDE is working on changing the curriculum.Rebel-Fan-74 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 29, 2021 2:31 pmReminds me of a RB at Dorman many years ago. Also, not everybody NEEDS to go to college, and we need to stop telling kids that. Welders can make 6 figures a year....

We start trainees at 23 a hr .why rack up student debt on a dead degree . My daughters friend has a 4 yr psychology degree 37 k a year . Just doesn't seem worth the investment .bringthewood wrote: ↑Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:51 pmThose things are in place. My older brother had a class where they had to keep a balanced "check book" all year long as they "paid bills" and were graded on it.Rebel-Fan-74 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 29, 2021 2:31 pmReminds me of a RB at Dorman many years ago. Nothing like that for me.
Yeah, some money education would have been good, I surely didn't get that at home.

Re: Question for the board...
Most schools now have business classes which touch on economic skills. Now it is an elective, but would do most students well to take it. But shame on the school, and the coaching staff, that allows any kid to get through high school not being able to read. And every program worth their salt ought to have a program in place where they closely eye academics from the 9th grade on. A shame that so many kids get to the end of their high school careers and have little future because they can't achieve the NCAA clearinghouse qualifications. Yea, it is the kids fault, but it is also the fault of those in charge. But have seen it happen all to often, where as long as they are eligible for Friday night, they could care less about what happens when there are no more Friday nights.

There is a huge disconnect between the 'educators' and the needs of the students.Blister wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 2:35 pmMost schools now have business classes which touch on economic skills. It is mostly because of the 'you HAVE to go to college' mindset. There are multiple courses that kids can take including your classes to help kids catch up, learn tech skills, explore disciplines, and hands on/job skills. But all the students hear is 'YOU HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE' message.
