I am in agreement with those who say 5 years. It takes time to change a program from the bottom up to be what a coach is trying to build. Some new coaches will land in the dream scenario of having lots of returning upperclassmen, and I think that we all agree that at this level, experience and playing time, are a huge factor in positive results on the field. Much like how most school districts handle newly opened schools, plaing only a JV schedule for at least 2 seasons, even non-coaches within the administration realize that time and experience is a key to building a successful program.
OK, now on to what I see as one of the biggest problems with football in this state. In most all districts, coaches need to have a teaching degree, or at least teach a class to be eligible to be a coach. If we are hiring educators to be coaches, then how can we expect to have the best coaches in place? Why not just hire football coaches in the first place if that is the primary goal? Of course that isn't the goal here. Educating children is. Just something that we, as fans, need to be reminded of from time to time. Winning is great, but it isn't the primary goal. Only a handful of teams win championships, and that does not make those student athletes any more special than the others who do not win.
That leads me to another issue. Coach hopping. Every year on this website, if not others as well, we see a thread about coaching changes and that list gets to inevitably be very long. Some coaches retire. Some get fired. And some are just trying to find a higher paying gig, or a spot more suitable to win. These coaches are on yearly contracts, just like every other educator in the state. This leads to no loyalty and the constant seeking of greener pastures. Why not give these coaches a 5 year contract? We are willing to allow them 5 years to get the job done. Hold them accountable and stop the coaching merry-go-round every year. What kind of values are we teaching these impressionable young men with this foolishness?
I know, just like political reform, it sounds great but those making those decisions have a vested interest in NOT doing that. I just feel that our kids deserve a better lifestyle model than the "the hell with everyone else, I only care about me" model of life that they are being exposed to. Climbing down. Fire at will.
HOW LONG SHOULD A COACH HAVE TO WIN

Re: HOW LONG SHOULD A COACH HAVE TO WIN
I think in most cases 5 years as long as the program is making progress.
In Dr.Browns case they pulled the plug way to early.
Berkeley is not the same program today it was 20 years ago and not sure it will get back
To that status soon....
To many factors in play....
Cane bay is taking most of the players and most of the new construction is in the Cane Bay district .
Stratford is starting to reload after a few down years.
And the staff at Goose Creek has done a good job building and retaining players.
Berkeley really should go 3 -4aaaa in order to rebuild their program.

I think that a School should give a Head Coach at least 4 years to see what they can do with that program. If the Team wasn't performing well after that 4 years is over then it would be time for a coaching change. As for Dr. Brown at Berkeley, I think that the School thought that Coach Brown would come back in and have the Stags winning again like before when he was there. But that just wasn't the case and that is probably why they let him go. I would have given Brown at least another year or 2.

Every job is different.
Obviously, you should be able to win quicker at a job like Byrnes or Dorman than at Blue Ridge or Travelers Rest.
