I am very pleased with our team's performance this year. We have good athleticism across the board, and our coaches have done a phenomenal job with the team. But I have no illusions about what we face in the playoffs. I was in attendance in 2009 the last time SF traveled to Rock Hill D3 stadium to face-off against Northwestern. This is not the same SF team that gave up 42 points to "Worley & Company" in the first quarter.HSFBGuru wrote:You are correct, Gaffney should be in the 2nd tier of teams. My reasoning for not believing in South Florence or Spring Valley for that matter is based on history. Historically PeeDee and Columbia area 4A teams have struggled mightily come playoff time (Dutch Fork got a fortunate draw last year with Byrnes and Gaffney being in the same side of the bracket) Time and time again an 11-0 or 10-1 team from the PeeDee or Columbia area gets beat by a team from the upper state that had a 7-4 or 8-3 regular season (that finished 3rd in their region). The reality is a Gaffney, Spartanburg, or South Pointe, as bad as they may look against Byrnes or Northwestern, they are probably sitting with an 11-0 or 10-1 type of record if they are NOT in Region 2 or 3. The biggest difference is speed. Go to the South Florence vs. Stratford game, then go to Northwestern vs. South Pointe, its like going from FCS football to FBS football. Goose Creek is the exception, coach Reedy has done a great job down there using size to an advantage to compete and beat many upper state teams, but GC is just so big. Most other teams don't have that advantage.
I fully understand that we won't get too much respect until we demonstrate that we can sustain this level of competitiveness. I'm sooooooo looking forward to the next couple of years here.
