Now that scrimmages and jamborees are wrapping up and we are getting into week 0, what teams surprised you (good or bad)?
To me, Dillon looked a little lax. Not bad but not as good as previous years.
Georgetown is rolling. They looked a lot better than they have in years past.
May River is looking good and timberland is looking down.
Georgetown? Well, I’ll say this. I got just as much faith in them rolling as I got in a flat bicycle tire that was fished out of the local river. Maybe the new coach will be the answer they needed.
Dillon will probably be ok they just reload. Once the younger players are coached up it’s on!
I think Aynor is going to do well this year.

Our first scrimmage against Cane Bay left me with unbridled enthusiasm for our prospects this year. Several of our players proudly posted Hudl highlights.
Last Friday, Sumter tempered that enthusiasm. Given the format of the scrimmage, it is difficult to say who won. But if I simply add up the scoring, I'll call it: Sumter 19, South Florence 10. I don't think we'll see many Hudl video from our players after this one, at least not from our offense. Our running game looked pretty good, but we were never able to reach the end-zone.
The format of the scrimmage: Both teams took turns on offense for 10 downs each, no chains. Penalties were called and announced to the coaches, but not walked off. There were coaches present on the field making on-the-spot corrections. If there was a fumble or an interception the ball was returned to the offence, unless it was time to switch possession. We were cycling players on and off the field constantly, so our underclassmen got a lot of playing time and on-the-spot coaching. After an hour, there was a short half-time break and then each punting team got the chance to hike the ball and kick away to a fair catch, 4 times each. The 2nd half continued in the same format as the 1st, at the end of two hours the place kicking teams each got 4 downs before the hand-shakes.
Neither team could reach the end-zone for the first 40 minutes, then a Sumter RB was able to break away and score from about 55 yards out. On the very next play, our QB threw to a side-line out route, our WR had a different route in mind. The result was a pick-6 for Sumter. We continued to go back and forth in the 2nd half, late in the game a SF corner picked off a pass and headed for the end-zone.
At the end of the game, Sumter kicked an extra point, a FG from about 15 yds, another FG from about 25 and then missed the last one from 30-35 out. (They didn't have the yard markers out, it was hard to judge.) The SF place kicking team lined up and kicked 4 extra points to end the scrimmage.
Scoring:
Sumter 6 6 1 3 3 = 19
SF 6 1 1 1 1 = 10
On the whole it was a good scrimmage. We went toe-to-toe with a very good Sumter team and didn't get thrashed. The Sumter visitors' stands are very close to the field, from where I was stilling it was clear that a lot of on-the-spot coaching was occurring.

Ok, from watching Beaufort's 2 Scrimmages against Bamberg and Summerville, here is what I observed. Bamberg will be a force in 1A. The Red Raiders look good on both sides of the ball. I look for them to go far in the 1A Playoffs. Summerville will definitely be a force in 5A. The Greenwave looks good on both sides of the ball also. I look for them to go far in the 5A Playoffs.
Ok, as for My Beaufort Eagles. Beaufort needs to work on their passing defense some more, Offensive line needs to block better, and the Kicking Game has got to be a lot better. But Beaufort still has a lot of athletes including QB Samari Bonds. The Eagles should be a force in 3A. I look for Beaufort to make some more noise in the 3A Playoffs.
THE 2023 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON IS HERE BABY!!!!
GO BEAUFORT EAGLES!!!!
