Daniel vs Pickens

Post by stretch »

After the win over Hart County we are traveling up the road to play county rival Pickens. The Blue Flame has a new staff and they got their first win two weeks ago before their BYE against Southside 41-13. The first two games were against Crescent and Franklin County (GA). Both ended in bad losses, 34-14 and 28-11.

My Lions have won their first 3 games by an average of 32 points against Greer, Easley and Hart County. This game against Pickens is big because one of the 4 main team goals is to win the County and winning this game will check that box. Obviously Pickens isn’t the best competition and this game shouldn’t be in doubt, we play our game and we will be fine.

I’m hoping we can continue to work on the passing game. It just feels off, but you look at the stat sheet and we only had 5 incompletions on 31 total attempts between the two QBs. The numbers are a little inflated because we run so many screens and quick passes, but still the receivers get YAC. I have 0 confidence in our vertical throws unless the receivers are wide open. OL and RBs are holding up their end and it’s nice to hand it off and know you’ll get at least 5 on the carry.

Defense wanted to make it interesting in the first half this past week, couldn’t tackle and couldn’t get off blocks. Second half things bounced our way. Fumbles and a pick six and pressure was back off. They have work to do but it’s still early in the year and there’s no reason to think we can’t get things to the level we need to be at come playoff time.

Who would’ve thought your two favorite schools would have the same amount of wins at this point in the season. It’s normal for your Flamers but not DF. Only difference between the two is DF will likely end with many more wins by the end of the year. Pickens though, I’d give them 1 maybe 2 more.

54-7 Lions win again. Checks the second box of our team goals, winning the county. We definitely had no sweat in this one, scoring on the first play from scrimmage and it was on from there. QBs and receivers were on their A-game tonight and that was great to see. Pickens lone score came at the very end so that stinks we couldn’t finish the shutout. Still very proud of the team and yet another win.

DWD .... the schedule is weak, Stretch. Your opponents have a combined record of 4-13...Riverside is probably the toughest team they play...and they are not very good. Being better than Greasley, the Feckless Flamers and 2A Liberty is...yawn. Sorry, I dozed off. The schedule needs some work...won't get you ready for the second season.

Nobody is claiming our schedule is in any way difficult and it is what it is. There isn’t anything we can do other than play the games in front of us.

DDub and I had this conversation before, and like me he couldn't figure out why the HC didn't improve the quality of non-region games. He mentioned teams like Hanna, Westside, Greenville, Stephens County, etc close by. Wouldn't have to travel far...and of course teams like South Pointe, Northwestern, Gaffney, Spartanburg etc...all relatively close. They could alternate Easley or Pickens each year...this ain't the '70s so being county champ is kinda pointless. They can't do anything about the region...it's weak...and not challenging. I think on any given day last year they were better than Powdersville, but had not been pushed in a close game and didn't respond like they could have....have to see how this season goes.

I really don’t think last year had anything to do with playing an easy schedule because you look at the last 3 years we haven’t played a hard schedule and 2 of those years we won state. The Powdersville game last year I thought we played our B- game and it still took them until the last second to win. They punched us in the mouth early and they responded great and led the whole 4th quarter.

The county goal started when Coach Wofford came from NW and implemented that as one of our 4 team goals. Obviously that’s a much bigger deal in York county than Pickens the competition is stiffer. I don’t mind playing both Pickens and Easley every year, I dislike them both so I like beating them badly but I understand what you’re saying they don’t help make a schedule more challenging.

In a perfect world where stretch could make the Daniel schedule I would definitely put two Region 2-5A schools on there, Hanna or Westside, and then the two county schools. Playing either Gaffney, Spartanburg, Byrnes or Dorman would be a good game to see for both teams. Hanna or Westside with the close proximity and good competition. Then I’d keep both county teams just because I like to see us beat them. Will a schedule like this happen? Probably not, other than the County games. Maybe they’ll surprise us next year with a trip to Gaffney but I’ll have to believe it when I see it.

Those previous two years, they were just a whole lot better than any of the other 3A schools, so even on an off night it didn't matter. Last year, there were several good 3A teams, and tougher competition earlier would have helped down the stretch, I believe. Another good one that is not too far would be Rabun Gap....good team, that is actually in GA, but plays the NC league. Getting a Region 2 team would definitely be a good game for DWD, but you are right...Hanna and Westside alternated each season would be good. A lot of fans would show up for those too. DF has to get Irmo back on the schedule soon as well...been a minute since they have played.
