Life ain’t fair either..doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep trying..what message does not playing send..quit when faced with a challenge..
I think every kid who chooses to play for these schools knows Gray will be on their schedule…however they still came out to play…they ain’t scared..so let ‘em play on and leave the protest to adults away from the field..
One thing is for sure..you ain’t hurting the gray kids…they are going on some really nice trips seeing the country and still playing football..while your team is sitting home wishing they were playing football instead of Fortnite..and come playoffs Gray will still be there just more battle tested..
Jmo.
The AA schools in their Region tried other options, nothing happened. Yeah, LIFE AIN'T FAIR sounds good, but the basic rules you play by should be equal. There are always going to be "better teams" like Byrnes in 2000-2010 when we had a great run. But we had the same rules as Gaffney, for the most part. Cherokee County open enrollment has to help you get players from Blacksburg some times. But remember when a WR named Melton, I believe, went from Gaffney to Dorman? The SCHSL stepped in and wouldn't allow him to play because they ruled the move as a "FOOTBALL RELATED MOVE" and said he had to sit out a year. That doesn't happen if the player moves to Gray because they don't have an attendance zone. Your protest of Melton's move would not matter at all. That is the big issue for those schools. Wait until that school opens up in Spartanburg area and they openly recruit players from Dorman, Byrnes, Spartanburg, and Gaffney... we will not like it either.
The schools tried the forfeit to bring more attention to the issue; and like magic, legislation was introduced to get the discussion going in the correct places.
It's not a SCHSL issue as they are enforcing the rules as they are currently written. SCHSL cannot make them play up as some suggested, because the SCHSL must use the same rules for all teams, so they don't have the flexibility to deal with the Gray, Oceanside, etc. If the Legislative Branch makes a rule about those schools, then the SCHSL will be able to do something... note: ABLE, whether they do or not is to be determined.
I will say this, I don't have a suggestion for a solution as both ideas that have been proposed have holes...
MOVE THEM UP - just relocates the issue, doesn't solve it
MAKE THEM PLAY IN THEIR OWN LEAGUE - currently on a few schools like this, hard to form a League
And don't forget, this is not just a FOOTBALL issue, look at the AA State Champions in other sports for the past few years and you will see what I mean.
