An 8 seed beat a 1? I know the brackets and seeding were different in the early part of the 2000's.
Division 2 without a doubt is leaps and bounds deeper than division 1. Stratford and South Pointe both pull off huge wins after traveling 2 and 3 hrs apiece against undefeated teams. Speaks to the incredible job of getting kids to focus on the task at hand by the coaches. Kudos to both staffs.

No true 8th seed has beat a 1 seed. An 8 seed now is equal to a 4 seed in the old way of bracketing.

The closest I that I know of to a true 8th seed beating a #1 was in 2005. Conway was the 8th seed with a 8-3 record but the local 3A teams we beat all had losing records that year so it drops us to the bottom points wise. Now we had a really good team and was not a real 8 seed team by comparison but we lost to #1 Spring Valley 15-14. SV had a fumble returned for a TD in the 4th quarter that won the game.

What was the old way of bracketing?

When there was an upper/lower state and the crossbracketing. Now everyone is seeded 1-16 so the #8 seed is basically a #4 seed in the opposite bracket. The #15 and #16 seeds would be the old #8 seeds.

Yeah. I've never heard of an upperstate or lowerstate 8 winning. Or a 16 for that matter.
I wonder how often 8's beat 1's in our new format.

I will look through the database and find some of the 8 seeds vs. 1 seeds upsets
Updated as I find them.......................
1988 Dorman was the 8 seed and went to Spartanburg and beat the Vikings
Lexington beat Summerville on the same night as a 8th seed.
