Clinton at Newberry

The Bulldogs will have their first real test of the season as the Red Devils make the trip down to Bulldog Stadium Friday night.

The Bulldogs are coming in at 2-0, and held Mid Carolina to -43 yards rushing and 0 total yards of offense last Friday. The Bulldog defense has given up less than 150 yards and 14 points combined in 2 games. On the offensive side, the Newberry offense continued to roll using the 2 QB system of Bryce Satterwhite and Kenton Caldwell. Both bring a different dynamic to the game when the are in. RB BJ Jones added 3 TD's Friday night, and Newberry has some talent WR's. The 83 total points the Bulldogs have through 2 games is the most they've scored to open a season since the 1997 team scored 84 total points.

Clinton comes in at 1-1 after beating rival Laurens on Friday. The Red Devils dropped a heart breaker to Woodruff to open the season, and rebounded nicely against the Raiders. Clinton will bring a physical run game Friday, and the mis-direction is always tough to stop.

Clinton leads the all time series 54-34-2, including the last 3 games. Last year's game was never close, as the Red Devils won 42-7. The last Newberry win was in 2019 when the Bulldogs got a late 2 point conversion to win 14-13.

This game should tell me a lot about what the Bulldogs have. The first 2 games were bad, the Bulldogs dominated both games from early on. I expect this to be much different. Newberry will have to cut down on the mistakes they made in the first 2 games to have a shot. The meat of the schedule starts this week, as Newberry will host Clinton before traveling to Chapin and Fairfield before returning home to finish out the non-region schedule with Saluda.

Newberry is ranked 8th in AAA and Clinton 5th in AA in the poll I saw from the HSSR

Tim, I hope you're right. I'm trying to temper my expectations for the season. The first 2 weeks have been dominate, but the competition wasn't great. I knew 2 years ago that this season and next could be special if the kids worked hard. We have some real talent out there. Going to be interesting to see what happens when they get in a battle. This might be the game to test them. Clinton is physical and they are going to hit people

Newberry is always a good game. Clinton will have to play mistake free football to win. On offense the OL is experienced. All starters returned from last year. The defense is young, but fast and physical. Always fun to visit Newberry!!

By the way, I was on that 1997 Clinton team. The Bulldogs beat us pretty good. I believe they hung 42 on us.

Score in 1997 was 42-21 on week 1, Bulldogs turned around and beat Chapin the next week 42-7.

I just looked and the 14 points allowed through the first 2 games is the lowest since the 2003 team allowed 14 points.

I won't be coming Friday night, I just don't like being out there for games these days with how crazy stuff is.

I know Newberry has their broadcast crew, but you could always listen to the Red Devil crew! 96.5 FM or www.largetime.net

Good luck to the Bulldogs!!

I'm not going to lie, I might would rather listen to the Red Devil crew. Since Jimmy Coggins stopped doing the Newberry games, it's hard to listen to.

He still does Newberry College games, he retired from high school games when Strickland retired. The main guy now is a professor at Newberry College and sometimes he forgets we can't see what he is seeing. He'll make calls and then not make another call for a good 5 minutes, when he comes back to calling like 6 plays have happened.
