Ian Guerin with The Sun News wrote:Ethan Smith, who started six games at quarterback at Conway last fall, has transferred to Socastee.

Smith’s father, Cole Smith, confirmed Monday that his son will be starting classes at his new school this week. However, Cole Smith said Ethan – also a strong tennis player – has not decided if he will play football or not in 2014. <excerpt>

What are the rules for transfers in Horry County? Did the family move?

Is he automatically eligible to play football for Socastee or does Conway have some say in it?

There is more to this story than most people know. He is a tennis player first and football player second. Ethan was beaten out by a freshman by the end of the season if that tells you anything. He is 6'4 200 and pretty much non mobile so he will really flourish in Socastee's wishbone attack. In short this was not a football move.

If he can't move how does he play tennis?

I couldn't tell you because I don't watch or play Tennis. I'm not downing the kid and wish he would stay at Conway but like I said there is more to this story than people know outside of the city of Conway. It stems from a letter his Dad wrote trying to get coach Jordan fired and that's all I'm going to say about that. Ethan is suppose to be a good Tennis player and that is his first love. Ethan was given every chance to succeed as the starting QB but was beat out by a Freshman by the end of the year. Socastee runs the wishbone and Ethan is a pure pocket passer so I just don't see him being a factor over there unless they change their offense. Like the article states he doesn't even know if he will play football this year or not. Again this is not a football move.

Sounds like it is a disgruntled parent. I know a lot about Tennis and a little about Chuck. It seems this kid is getting bad advice from a parent. Somtimes you are not as good as you think you are or your parent thinks you are.If he thiks he is going to play tennis on a bigger scale he needs to play a lot more than he has to get noticed by colleges.

You got the right idea. I really had high hopes for Ethan as he certainly looks the part physically but just never realized his potential. I wish him the best at Socastee.
