Tough Road Back to State (Sumter 2014 Schedule)

Post by bbrown1240 »

New foes and old foes line up Sumter's football schedule for the upcoming season. We will go to York before taking on Crestwood so hopefully we will break our 5 year losing streak but Ty'Son Williams has offers from several FBS schools. Brutal back to back with Rock Hill and state champion Dutch Fork would necessitate the bye before taking on what will probably be an undefeated South Florence team. Not to mention doing this more than likely with a new coach and new system as it appears Reggie Kennedy will take the money and go to Irmo. We return just about everyone on offense, but defense will be very young. The offense will have to carry us through the first half of the season before the defense starts to take shape. Take a look below.

8/22: York - Cougar stadium
8/29: Crestwood - Freddie Solomon Field @ Sumter Memorial Stadium
9/5: Stratford - Ray Stackley Field
9/12: Lakewood - J. Frank Baker Stadium
9/19: Rock Hill - Freddie Solomon Field @ Sumter Memorial Stadium
9/26: Dutch Fork - DFHS Stadium
10/3: Bye
10/10: South Florence - Freddie Solomon Field @ Sumter Memorial Stadium
10/17: West Florence - Freddie Solomon Field @ Sumter Memorial Stadium
10/24: Carolina Forest - CFHS stadium
10/31: Conway - The Backyard
11/7: Socastee - Freddie Solomon Field @ Sumter Memorial Stadium

Way too early 2014 regular season prediction: 7-4

That's a pretty tough region schedule. Y'all need it going into the D1 bracket.

West Florence brings back Marquane Goodman at QB, but I'm not sure what else. It doesn't look CF or Conway will be making much noise. Socastee is the wild-card but they won't have Renfrow taking snaps and making plays this year. I've been thinking that the region title will be decided in Sumter in week 7.

No idea whatsoever. Maybe David Prince from South Florence lol. This late in the game, the great coaches are not leaving their program at this time. I feel like our best bet right now is to lure Paul Sorrells away from his administrative job at Thomas Sumter to come coach the team this season. He has coached these guys before and they could easily adapt to his system. But right now I have no clue. We may want to think about an interim coach for the season.

Coach Howell is a good coach and a great man. Not very sure if he was head coach material yet. He was mainly an offensive guy at Sumter. He needs a great defensive coordinator to be very successful. I would give him a couple more years there, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come back to Sumter, it is his alma mater.

Our offense was pathetic last year. He helped a D1 back who had 2400 yards his Jr. year fall to just around 500 last year. Had no clue how to get him the ball. We had a great defense last year is the only reason we snuck into the playoffs. Last nights spring game the teams scored over 100 points. And no not because of a high powered offense, several turnovers for scores and a pathetic defense. Our DC quit rumored because he had no faith in Howell. Howell in turn hires former Easley head coach Jabo Burgess to be DC. Jabo was fired for going 1-32 his last 3 seasons. Sumter somehow makes it to state the year he leaves. His heart is not here it is in Sumter. He wants to come back and we want him to go back. Howell was handed the keys to a nice program. Not a state powerhouse but a good team. Everything I see says he's already torn it down. Easley will be lucky to win 2-3 games this season.

Yeah i fat fingered it...it is 9/26.

As for Coach Howell...lol...I guess Easley should hope he applies for the Sumter position. Let me say this though….I am a big fan of head football coaches either being athletic directors, or PE teachers, rather than teaching another subject. Coach Howell does teach social studies. Football is such a tough sport that requires more planning and preparation than any other sport. I would think its very hard to be head football coach and teach a subject in which you actually have to teach, rather than let the kids run around or sit in an office. Not making excuses for Coach Howell, but how much time can he really dedicate to preparation, especially during the season in which he is teaching social studies and grading papers for 200 kids? I have been one of Coach Howell’s biggest critics at times. Maybe he should hire an offensive coordinator and not take those reigns himself. We’ll see what happens.
