It definitely didn't hurt Spartanburg. They looked well oiled.

and yet Byrnes was right there with that missed fumble call.

This is true. That was a touchdown for sure. I told Yankee Reb when it happened that he had control going across the plane. That TD doesn't win the game though. Byrnes went out on downs on their next possession with a theoretical chance of still winning or tying the game.
Both defenses looked great but the Byrnes offense was playing uphill all night. 12 sacks and a lot of them were coverage sacks. I wonder if an extra day would have helped the Rebels. Either way, both teams are going to be a difficult test for the Cavaliers.

I agree, but we tried the fake in our own zone. I hate saying someone gave points,
But we literally gave SHS 3 there. Which without those 3, the td would have tied it.

We couldn't decide if it was an intentional fake. I didn't see the snap, I looked up and saw the Vikes barreling down on the punter. He looked like a deer in the headlights when he cocked his arm to throw.
It just didn't make any sense to call a fake when you're down by only 7 points and punting from your own territory. You're right, if they called for a fake it was a bone-headed decision.

I think the heartbreaker was the first fumble. I think before that fumble Byrnes had rattled off 5 straight running plays, 3 hand offs and 2 keepers I think for 1st down yardage each time. Spartanburg was completely on it's heels and against the ropes being hammered by body blows. If Byrnes doesn't fumble, I think they charge on into the endzone without throwing another pass on that drive.
Micah didn't have targets for most of the night. Spartanburg had everything blanketed. Micah didn't turn the ball over much but only because his alternative to making a bad throw was to take a sack too often.
I agree 100% with you about offensive play calling. I think I even posted it in the prediction thread earlier in the week. What I saw against Northwestern was a Byrnes QB who got a great look downfield and made clutch throws while out of the pocket. The difference was he was escaping the Northwestern defenders. Byrnes should have come in with plays designed to roll Micah out of the pocket early and often. He also probably dumps more balls to the sideline instead of taking a sack for a 10 yard loss. That would be the only criticism I have of the Byrnes QB. Gotta sail it over a receiver's head and out of bounds if no one is open. But it's much more difficult to dump the ball out of bounds from the mid hash mark in a collapsing pocket.

I don't mind saying it, I'd feel a lot better about our chances next Friday if we had Byrnes' defense. The Byrnes D did a great job Thursday night!
