What have you learned so far this season? I've learned.....

Fort Dorchester is the team to beat in 5A.

A new coach can make a BIG impact at a school {see T L Hanna and Byrnes}

Some things never change {South Pointe is GOOOOOOOD}

Just to name a few:

Region One seems to be T L Hanna's to lose now. Seems like they have gotten everyone's attention and most have jumped on the idea that they will be a force to be considered this year. That offense drives defensive coaches crazy trying to prepare for it in just a week.

Region Two seems to be Greenwood with Hillcrest and Mauldin still making some noise. October 6 & 13 will see Greenwood face off in successive weeks with those two and the Region could be well in hand, or it could come down to the rematch from the opening week when the Rams and Mavericks met in the Non-Region game in their schedules.

Region Three was looking like all five teams could be 2-2 back when we started the season and that is still possible with these teams; although, the Rebels seem to be back with impressive wins over Don Bosco and Northwestern. While I’m solidly in favor of the changes at District 5 and like what I’ve seen to this point, I think I will wait to hand the Region Championship Trophy to any one yet. All five of these teams have the potential to go deep into the playoffs, like last year when the last four teams in the Upper State bracket were all from Region Three….

Region Four is still Northwestern territory in my mind, even with that 2-2 start…. South Pointe may be the best team in the State, not just 4A, but State, so that loss is understandable. The loss to the Rebels last week was by a bigger margin than I expected, but they did shoot themselves in the foot a time or two. Fort Mill is 3 and 1, but wins over Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Lancaster and West Florence are not exactly earth shaking wins; Clover has two wins against a couple of North Carolina schools that don’t show us anything; Rock Hill has improved some and Nation Ford is sporting losses to South Point bigtime and Irmo and York. So I’m still with Northwestern here.

Region Five has Irmo off to a great start… until you notice that the four wins are not really that impressive; Spring Valley does garner some more attention with the win over Sumter, but again, the others are not ringing any bells. So I’m back to Dutch Fork with the loss at home to Fort Dorchester, the win over Independence and the cancelled game. I’m still going with the Silver Foxes to win the Region. What about Lexington, you say? I say when they play someone with a pulse and win, I will at least look at them.

Region Six gives us Carolina Forest with wins over no one that I know anything about {strictly on me, I don’t know them} and they are playing Myrtle Beach this week and a win there and I will have something to go on with the Panthers. Conway’s start includes a nice win over Hartsville, so I’m thinking this one could be about as wide open as Region Three as I have to throw Sumter in there as well and Socastee has two NC wins and a “W” against Myrtle Beach.

Region Seven has Fort Dorchester.

What? No comments on Region Seven? I think I said it all when I said “Fort Dorchester”. Am I missing something else? I’d be happy to read your comments on Region Seven as well as any or all the other Regions as well…..

Unlike some folks, I don’t claim to have all the answers and know everything there is to know about SC High School Football; but at least I have the courage to put my thoughts out there for review and welcome you to agree or disagree

I've learned that I can probably start wondering where I'll go to watch a game in round 1. :|

Northwestern should win it's region. I would argue that, this year, Region 4 is probably the weakest 5A region in the state. Then one-and-done in the playoffs.

08.18.2017 @South Pointe Loss 7-39
08.25.2017 Dorman Win 42-28
09.01.2017 @South Mecklenburg (NC) Win 45-0
09.08.2017 Byrnes Loss 14-48
09.15.2017 @Spartanburg Prediction: Loss
09.22.2017 Gaffney Predition: Loss (although really looks like a toss up)
09.29.2017 Fort Mill Predition: Win
10.06.2017 Bye
10.13.2017 @Clover Prediction: Win
10.20.2017 Nation Ford Prediction: Win
10.27.2017 @Rock Hill Prediction: Win

I went on record as predicting that Northwestern would have a losing season. The win against Dorman was unexpected....in my humble opinion. Questionable coaching (hc/oc), returning starting qb quit and transferred to York right before school started, defensive secondary decimated by graduation, huge losses on offense at qb and rb, many intangibles I have heard about that have been & are disruptive.....they all add up. If we defeat Gaffney and run the table in our region (totally expected), then we will have accomplished winning and losing the ones we were expected to win and lose. With a win against Gaffney, an overall record of 7-3. Losing at Gaffney, we wind up 6-4. Mediocrity. The worst of the best or the best of the worst.

To me, a victory against Spartanburg would show that Spartanburg is not as good as many think.

We shall see if the kids get better as the season progresses. Also, if the mistakes made in the Byrne's game show up against Spartanburg. If they don't, benefit of the doubt is granted as "one of those games". If they do, then the real problem starts with the hc.

You never know how the game against Bye will turn out. I predict a defensive struggle with very few points, if any, scored.

 @ tg

Great post 74! Superbly written!

I've learned that are coaches finally gave up on the 3-4 and went to a 4-3 which seems to be effective. I'm drinking the rebel punch. I was there at D3 last Friday.

Not saying I like the punch. It's pretty bitter and I'm not sure that someone didn't pee in it. (Any of you remember the two cops in

"The Hollywood Knights"? "This punch taste funny to you?" "Does got a little wang too it.")

Anyway I'm drinking it. I'd love to be wrong.

Sptbg is pretty good when they're not throwing punches.

Gaffney and Byrnes fans are still the best.

Went to the CF MB game last night. All I'll say is CF is not very good. Only 14 points on a defense allowing 50 points per game. MB is just an average team but getting better. Socastee is who I thought they were. After two wins against weak NC teams and hanging 50 on MB, lost to NMB 41-7. SF and WF don't look any better so far. Overall it doesn't say much for our region this year but don't think Sumter and Conway doesn't have really good teams. I don't know how far we can go but Conway has the most talented team I've ever seen. We have 4 seniors with D1 offers and several more with FCS offers. Sophomore DE Tonka Hemingway is becoming a national recruit with early offers from USC, Clemson, Georgia and Michigan. How does that translate? I have no idea but it sounds impressive. I know FD and Dutch Fork are the two lower state teams everyone has penciled in the state championship but if we put it all together don't count us out.

Doesn't say much for the CF offense.

Last week when Socastee beat Myrtle Beach. That was the Largest turnaround that I can ever recall.
2016 Myrtle Beach beat Socastee 70-0. 2017 Socastee beat Myrtle Beach 51-34.
An 87 point turnaround from one year to the next.

SF Band dad's team is currently only averaging 10.5 pts per game. That is 39th out of 42 teams in 5A. :(
Have only scored 3 points in their last two games combined.

I think most would agree that Region 6 will likely be determined by the Sumter vs. Conway game.
Sumter could still be a dangerous team.
Sumter's only loss is to Spring Valley.
Spring Valley is currently 5-0 and averaging 40 points per game. Scored 42 or more 4 times (including 51 against Sumter :o )

Conway and Spring Valley seem to be the most likely to spoil a Fort D vs. Dutch Fork rematch.
Summerville at full strength may also be a team to keep an eye on.
