Dr. Judd Starling, principal of Central High School, was named vice president of the S.C. High School League, at the league’s spring meeting March 9.
Starling, who has served as president of the Class AA league, will take office when the new term begins on July 1.
“It’s an honor to be nominated. I’ve served on a lot of committees involved with athletics over the years because they are important,” Starling said. “There’s a large number of kids in our area schools who are involved in sports, and that involvement can carry over to other things in life.”
Starling will replace current SCHSL vice president, Marion Waters of Greenville. Starling will serve alongside the current SCHSL president, Paul Anderson of Ware Shoals.
“We have four schools involved in the league around Pageland, so it will be good to have a voice from our area,” Starling said.
SCHSL currently mandates the high school sports of member schools, and is the governing body of high school athletics in the state.
SCHSL has been a major topic of discussion in recent news, in part with a new legislation determining the future of the league.
“We have taken a lot of steps in March and taken a look at the current legislation,” Starling said. “The high school league has governed high school athletics for the last 100 years, and we would like to continue to do that for the next 100.”
Starling is in his fifth year as principal of CHS, and was named Principal of the Year in 2012 by the S.C. Athletic Administrators Association for the AA division. Starling also assists in coaching wrestling and led the CHS Eagles to a regional title in 2010.
