Woodruff has a big game coming up this week at Varner Stadium when 2A #6 ranked Southside Christian comes calling. The Sabers have outscored their opponents 122-14 through two games, a staggering number despite both opponents falling into sisters of the poor territory. Still, SSC is formidable with a big offensive line and a bigger DL that goes 6'1" 240, 6'2" 270, 6'1" 305 and 6'3" 260 across the board. SSC also returns Marist College commit JW Hertzberg at QB and bruiser Mallory Pinkney at RB.
Woodruff, meanwhile, is 2-0 for the second straight season and are once again loaded with playmakers. 1,000 yard receiver Omarion McKelvin is back and has picked up where he left off with 206 yards receiving and two scores on 14 receptions over the first two games. New quarterback BJ Bailey has a big arm and is a fast runner for 6'4" 210. The ultimate weapon, however, is junior tailback/defensive back Shamare Dendy who transferred in from Laurens. Dendy has been virtually unstoppable through two games and is a dynamic combo of speed and power. Against Chesnee he rushed for 169 yards on 17 carries and then went for 163 on 18 carries and three touchdowns against Broome. He is also lethal catching passes out of the backfield and will knock your block off on defense. A true old-school type of player. In addition, the Wolverines' OL, while small by anyone's standards, are blocking dynamos and have yet to allow a single sack of Bailey through two games.
Woodruff comes in ranked #9 in 3A. Southside Christian is #6 in 2A. Both teams are loaded with talent and the Sabers are looking for revenge as Woodruff went to their house last year and stunned SSC 28-27 with a furious 4th quarter comeback. Who will take home the win this year? When the clock hits zero....
