They have those combines in the summer. Plus in this day and time coaches can find all the film they want on HUDL. Truth be told, they could probably pick the team before the season even starts.

True but its been going on for years.i do not agree with picking early.you may have a diamond in the rough that it clicks for and has a break out season that deserves it.but man politics is politics.

agree, play the games to see who the best players are. Also, picking now, some players might get injured before the game

As another poster noted, the Combines are where a majority of the decisions are made.
Unfortunately it is a lot to ask of coaches to focus on the film of thousands of players in addition to their own team and opponents each week. So, at the combines, they get a list of 250 or so, and then pay attention to them to ween it down to their selections.
Yes, you will miss out on some late bloomers, but thats just the way it is.

ITS BS AS EVERYTHING

So, a game reserved exclusively for Seniors, have the teams chosen while the players are Juniors. Makes zero sense. How about the kid who is stuck behind a good senior at his position while he is a junior. Doesn't get much PT. Has a monster season as a starting Senior, but doesn't get picked for the game. Stupid is as stupid does.

What do you want the coaches to do? Wait until Thanksgiving to pick the team just to make sure that a late bloomer doesn't slip past them? And folks forget that in addition to their Shirne Bowl duties, they also have the full time responsibilities of their own teams throughout the season. As far as the late bloomer? Very few, if any, with the talent to play in the Shrine Bowl find themselves stuck on the bench as underclassmen. It may happen every so often, mostly at QB, but so rare that it isn't worth ditching the current system.
