Wando, Oceanside coaches’ feud .

Post by Fortfor5 »

Jimmy Noonan heard the grumblings for years from his peers around the state. The complaints came from the same group of people — the coaches, athletic directors and principals from the small schools in rural towns across South Carolina.

Wando should be better for sure with 4k students

these athletic schools opening is a sign of the times I guess. it aint changing anytime soon. making them use a multiplier for classification is a good idea because even though these schools receive money from the state, they don't seem to be under the same requirements as public schools

talking about number of days and seat time requirements, not sure about EOC's and the like

You are right, Wando is the wrong team to be ringing this bell, especially in football. But the point by Coach Noonan is a good one. At schools like Wando/Dorman, etc, only about 20% of their students aren't playing sports. Whereas the Oceanside's of the world, more than 75% of the students play sports, which with an enrollment of 600 is 450 students. Using the 25% number, a "normal" school with 450 student athletes has a population of 1800 which would be large enough to qualify as a 5A school in South Carolina. Just something to think about.

Wando has the same problem that JL Mann has. They are located in a predominately white collar environment and if you look at how well Wando performs in all the other sports you will see that the kids that attend Wando demographically prefer other sports to Football. Here is a list of last years results of sports other than football and wrestling:

State Championships in Boys Soccer, Boys and Girls Swimming
Runner-up in Girls Volleyball, Boy's and Girl's Tennis, Boy's Lacrosse
#3 in the State in Boy's XC
#10 Boy's Golf
#2 in the State in Boy's Track
#9 in the State in Girls Track
Qtr Finals in Girls Lacrosse, Girl's Soccer
Qtr Finals of the Lower State Championship Boy's Baseball
Semi Final G Soccer.

This shows that they are competitive in ALL SPORTS EXCEPT Football and Wrestling. They need to stop whining and pass me some more Cheese.

Also with the New Realignment coming out probably just after the beginning of the new year, many people will be in for a huge dis appointment. Many teams will be changing classifications and I say if you don't like tough. If you are a private school you can always go and play with SCISA.

I’m not that famiIar with the Lowcountry but I think the problem with Wando football is Coaching...just like it was at Dorman many years ago before the arrival of Gutshall. Dorman has been one of SC’s biggest school for many, many years but never had any consistent football success before Gutshall arrived. It seems Wando has never found the right coach...they definitely have enough kids to compete. Dorman has a lot of white collar students too, yet they are very good in basketball and competitive in football due to COACHING! Wando is not...in either football or basketball, because of a LACK of coaching. Just my two cents.

I lived over by the old Dorman High back in the late 90’s. So you’re correct about their issues being coaching, but Wando like even Hilton Head on a much smaller scale where you can’t pull from Charleston and their demographics like Hilton Head could pull from Bluffton it is a much bigger problem. The coach currently is actually doing in my opinion a good job with the talent he has. The current kicker (former soccer player also) at Carolina was a Wando product. They have a few skill positions but no real size to match up with Dorchester’s, Summerville, or Berkeley down here that requires power along with speed. If you don’t have the talent willing to get hit you play with what you got. I watched them last year and and this year against Dorchester and they were more competitive last year but still got beat twice. Once in regular season and then sacrificed in the playoffs. This year after beating Summerville my hopes were up for a good game. Middle of the 2nd qtr my buddies we’re watching UNC vs Wake Forest on their phones.

Schools like Oceanic, Greys, Legion, and soon to be a school in the Greenville Spartanburg area don’t have to follow the same rules Dorman does. They can recruit and come after your players. They are modeled very similar to IMG Academy in Florida. That is what Jimmy is complaining about. They are taking what little talent he has that hasn’t gone to Bishop England (Private School on Daniel Island beside Mt Pleasant). Now he has another High School opening inside of 12 months that will take and split his talent level even more. He has a tough situation. Christ Church (Private School) hurt JL Mann on there football. Same situation as Wando because they are competitive in all other sports and won several of the State Championships Wando didn’t. You have to have participation and TALENT!

I know all about a lot of these private athletics-first schools like Grey Collegiate and their ilk. Yes they steal athletic talent from public schools but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The main problem with a number of them (not all of them but too many of them) is that they are inferior high schools. They are a joke academically. Their teachers don’t even have to be certified to teach whatever subject they are teaching. Theses kids go to these schools don't learn as much as those that go to Dorman or Wando or most other public schools. They graduate as dunderheads and then when they’re not good enough to go pro ?or in some cases even to college) in their sport, they are up crap creek without a paddle and have to become a garbage man or janitor or say “would you like fries with that Whopper no onions, sir?”

When I was in high school at Dorman from 1986-1990 I could outcoach all those idiots on the sideline they called “coaches”. I actually got in trouble for yelling advice to the basketball coaching staff once! Thank goodness it has gotten better!
