Haven’t posted a lot about Sumter since Rock Hill since those games went as expected, if not better considering my expectations at the beginning of the season.
I’ll put this out there...Blythewood will win their first round matchup if their QB Strickland is healthy. Tweaked a knee towards the end of the first half and missed the second half.
Sumter really didn’t play as well offensively as they have been before their bye week, especially the offensive line. Self inflicted errors combined with tough Blythewood defense as always. Defense bent about as far as it could without breaking. Allowed a touchdown on a 4th down where we just lost a receiver on a QB scramble. Blythewood was content to dink and donk their way down the field and was pretty successful. Sumter forced 3 turnovers and should have had maybe 3 more. Strickland got the ball out quick, neutralizing our pass rush a little bit but we still did a good job getting several tackles for loss. Though Blythewood moved the ball, it still seemed that Sumter was in control the entire game and Sumter was clearly the better team.
We have to be the most penalized team in the state. If we clean up the penalties we’ll have a chance to do some good things.
What I think about this year so far...this Sumter team looks better than last year’s team. On paper...we will match up well with the top teams in the state. It won’t necessarily mean a state championship, but I really believe that our entire first team defense will be playing on Saturdays after they graduate.
