FLORENCE, S.C. – Drew Marlowe was approved Thursday night by the Florence One Schools board to become South Florence’s new football coach. He replaces David Prince, who resigned last month

The Bruins finished this past season 4-7, losing in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Goose Creek. Prince, who had been the Bruins’ coach since 2012, finishes his career as the Bruins’ coach with a 53-41 record.

FLORENCE, S.C. – Drew Marlowe has been preparing for this literally since the day he graduated. Or the day after, to be precise. “I played for coach (Paul) Sorrells, and I will always be grateful to him,” the Sumter High alum said Friday. “He hired me the day after I graduated from high school as an 18-year-old guy to come in there. A lot of people dream about coaching in 5A their whole lives and work their whole careers to get there.

“I was just so fortunate at 18 to be a coach at a school like Sumter High.” Eleven years later, Marlowe has many of the same of feelings after being introduced as the new South Florence football coach. He was approved Thursday night by the Florence One Schools board to replace David Prince, who resigned last month.

Must confess, my eyebrows went up when I realized how young he is. Our Conway contingent informed me that Chuck Jordan was younger when Conway hired him.

Coach Marlowe has my best wishes and full support.

I'm hearing that some of the locals are dismayed at this choice.
