Stanley Hunter and Prince Miller starred for the Byrnes Rebels in the mid-2000s and helped build one of the top high school football powerhouses in the country as Byrnes won eight state titles between 2002 and 2011.

Now the two are a part of a group pushing to change the name of Byrnes High School — located in Duncan, just west of Spartanburg.

Yes, this is a hot topic in the area and there will be a change.

It will not happen without a lot of issues and a good bit of controversy and possibly some intense discussions.

Personally, I see both sides and understand both sides. In a day where everyone is easily offended and everything is considered racist or politically incorrect; these issues will continue to surface and will become the norm. Washington is no longer going to be the Redskins and in baseball, Cleveland is changing from Indians. Atlanta better get ready because they may be next. In Duncan, this topic has surfaced several times since 1970's and each time it goes away. This time, I think change will happen. I think change should happen, and I know that may seem surprising.

My reason is not political nor racial; it is based solely on common sense. Why waste a lot of time and money on something that doesn't really matter in the big picture? What is important is what happens in the classroom and on the field. What you call it doesn't matter. I'm proud of what the players and coaches have accomplished and will accomplish in years to come. Changing the name will not be EASY, but instead of having something divide us, let's have something that will unite us! Let's form a committee with a varied and balanced membership and work together to come up with something new and move forward.

I mean seriously, you are 3 hours away. I don't know anything about your Stags....but I am sure there is a reason for that, right?

there should be a no names policy already. Gotta be Duncan something. Maybe float 4-5 names and let the students and community vote

Byrnes is a school that has several small towns and communities feed into it! Just being called Duncan Wildcats would not represent the entire district ! I would be okay with just removing first 6 letters ( James F.) officially be Byrnes Rebels .Think with changing Mascot in 1991 kinda help community move forward

All sounds well and good. But changing names will solve nothing. Then it will just be on to the next demand. These folks still think we are in 1850 as opposed to looking at what this country has done over the years. It is more free than any place on earth. We corrected our issues with slavery even though in that day and time it was viewed as an accepted business practice throughout the world. Still is in some places. I also am amused that there is no animosity against their own forefathers that sold them out back in the day. Nor against quite a few blacks that actually owned slaves themselves in the South. I know we have become a society of victims over the last few decades, but folks can accomplish whatever they want these days. Many, of all races, should take more advantage of that opportunity.

MIDDLE TYGER MUSTANGS - Or would that be offensive to Chevy and Dodge drivers?

I actually love that! That fits the area part and the mascot name is awesome!
Seriously, I think it should be something very similar to that ! Everyone in D5 can still feel like school represents entire district!
