I saw this meme on Facebook. It caused me to stop and think about it really hard. It does pose a very interesting question.

they are both and have been for a while, and that's what makes them so powerful. Top quality education and millions in sports dollars that may even be billions soon for the Bama's, Clemson's, Michigan's, etc.

if they were just a football factory teaching a few classes, they would all be playing football this season

I've often wondered why the NFL doesn't follow the MLB model and have Minor League teams and skip college.

Go from high school to the "minors" until you get called up to the BIG LEAGUE. It works for baseball and the kids who had zero intentions of obtaining a degree don't have to act like they are real students. There would still be enough talented kids to keep college football alive, but it wouldn't be the same that we are used to today.

good idea, but I wonder if Dabo and Saban could make 8 mil a year coaching in the minors? (actually know that they would not make close to that)

and baseball has the minors and college ball, so maybe both in football

I like that idea. A minor league for those who have football skills but are not prone to academia. And college for those who wish to have a diploma to fall back upon in case plan A falls through. Major college football might possibly resemble the FCS model rather than the FBS model if that were to happen.

Power 5 schools have basically been minor league football for years. With the exception of a very few schools, a vast majority of players couldn't sniff admittance to these schools on their own academic merit. Many of these schools a freshman has to have 1300, 1400, to compete to get in. Ball players have to pass the low bar of the NCAA clearinghouse. Then they are guided by advisors and tutors for the time they are there. Without that they couldn't hope to even stay eligible. So of course it is a sham. But it is big business, and it is always about that dollar bill.

I think it would be interesting to see the NFL cut the draft back just like MLB went from 40 rounds to 5. So many players are signed as free agents after the draft for next to nothing and really only the first couple of rounds get any money. Plus much like the NBA unless you are a 1st or 2nd round pick your odds of making the team drop exponentially too, so why all the drama for people that are going to get cut?
