Rebel Fan 74 brought up the old region 2 4A and talking about the Rock Hill and Sumter game and I have to admit I miss those days of football. That region was the murder row of regions and if you were lucky enough to get off of death row then come playoff time you were set to whip anybody from any other region cause you were definitely battle tested.

The old region 2 4A teams that I remember were

Rock Hill
Northwestern
Dorman
Spartanburg
Union
Gaffney
Boiling Springs

Then it went
Rock Hill
Northwestern
Dorman
Spartanburg
Gaffney
Boiling Springs
Byrnes

Man those were the days and this was back before Byrnes had that run of greatness this was back when they were just entering 4A and were still small compared to what the others were. Lets swap stories about the games from back then

So did any of these teams have a region title streak? Or was a diff. region champ every year. Seems almost impossible to start any kind of streak in that gauntlet

Chester and Lancaster were thrown in this region some years in the 70's and 80's

If my records are correct, I think region champions for Region II - AAAA from 1976 - 2001 are as follows:

I think the "Old" Region as it is known, truly dissolved in 2002 realignment with Region 2 being B. Springs, Byrnes, Dorman, Gaffney, Laurens, Spartanburg ----- And Region 3 being Fort Mill, Lancaster, N'western, Rock Hill, Spring Valley, Ridge View

1970 - Gaffney (as region 3)
1971 - Union (region 3)
72 - Gaffney (region 3)
73 - Spartanburg (region 3)
74 - Spartanburg (Dorman & Spartanburg in Region 2, all others in Region 3)
75 - Union (region 3) (
76 - Union
77 - Spartanburg
78 - Gaffney
79 - Spartanburg
80 - Gaffney
81 - Gaffney
82 - Union
83 - Spartanburg
84 - Spartanburg
85 - Northwestern
86 - Spartanburg
87 - Northwestern
88 - Spartanburg
89 - Rock Hill
90 - Union
91 - Northwestern
92 - Spartanburg
93 - Gaffney
94 - Spartanburg
95 - Spartanburg
96 - Rock Hill
97 - Rock Hill
98 - Northwestern
99 - Spartanburg
00 - Dorman
01 - Dorman

Spartanburg - 12 Region Titles
Gaffney - 6 Region Titles
Union - 5 Region Titles
Northwestern - 4 Region Titles
Rock Hill - 3 Region Titles
Dorman - 2 Region Titles

Since the 2002 Realignment through the 2014 season, Region 2-4A has been a revolving door of teams. The winners of this region have been Byrnes (10 times), Dorman (2 times), Gaffney (1 time) and that's all from 2002 - 2014.

I'd have to do the maths for overall (including the times they've played as non-region opponents). If you want to know Gaffney's win % against them ONLY as region opponents I'll leave that below.

WHEN GAFFNEY PLAYED OPPONENTS IN THE REGION (current format of SCHSL region assignments began with 1968 season)
The below stats include only games that were considered "Region" games and includes all seasons from 1968 - 2020.

DOES NOT include games in seasons where Gaffney played these teams as "Non-Region" opponents (ex. 2020 Spartanburg game is non-region) so it would not be reflected in this at the end of the season.

Also, DOES NOT include any times that Gaffney played opponent in the playoffs or twice in the regular season (i.e. Spartanburg in late 80's early 90's) as one game in the regular season was considered "non-region" and the playoff game would not count toward a "region" game.

Opponent -- Gaffney Wins - Gaffney Losses -- Gaffney Win %

Boiling Springs -- 27-6 -- 81.8%
Byrnes -- 12-10 -- 54.5%
Chester -- 17-1 -- 94.4%
Dorman -- 24-16 -- 60%
Lancaster -- 13-3 -- 81.3%
Northwestern -- 17-21 -- 44.7%
Rock Hill -- 28-10 -- 73.7%
Spartanburg -- 17-27 -- 38.6%
Union -- 17-9 -- 65.4%

Total Win/Loss here would be 172-103 for a total win % against these teams as REGION OPPONENTS of 62.5%.

So split the difference of 70% and 50%.

Gaffney's overall record in "Region Games" (Region 2 and 3) against all region opponents (22 different opponents all-time) is 215-112 which comes to 65.75%.

I did the maths on this. For the all-time record against the above 9 teams Gaffney is 326-194 against them all-time, for a win % of 62.7% (slightly higher than the 62.5% when playing them ONLY as region opponents.

not a problem! Feel free to ask me (pretty much) anything, any time, and I'll hopefully be able to answer it. The only thing I don't actually have are specific player stats and team stats by games since that hasn't always been published in newspapers. Anything else though and I should be able to help.
