SCHSL playoffs, quarantine can mean forfeit
Scott Chancey -- The Morning News -- SCNOW.com

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- In a SCHSL memo today to its superintendents, principals and athletic directors that was obtained by the Morning News, commissioner Jerome Singleton stated if a team in the SCHSL playoffs is under a quarantine for an extended period that would keep it from playing in its upcoming scheduled playoff game, that quarantined team would have to forfeit.

Singleton then addressed the possibility of teams hiding a positive COVID-19 test so that team doesn't HAVE to forfeit a playoff game. "While this format makes things challenging, I am confident the member schools will continue to practice health and safety measures and not compromise the health and safety of any member school athlete, coach and staff for the sake of competing in a playoff contest.

"Health and safety first. Wins and losses later!" he added.

These teams with covid-19 issues should be forced to forfeit games now because of the effect on other teams. All of these postponements and cancellations should have consequences. Up to and including omission from Playoff considerations.

I just don’t know about this. I mean these kids had everything taken away last spring. They had no idea if they would even play this fall. Had to work out on their own all summer. And to get to the playoffs or championship and have to forfeit?! I would hate to be the one to tell them.

Failure to follow directions put in place by the SCHSL, School Districts, Mayors, and the Governor, has to be punished when those actions affect others who choose to abide by those directions. From the NFL down, make examples out of those who choose to put their personal preferences above the good of society.

This is all so stupid on a variety of levels. But I suppose the MSM mania rules the day. But the first, and most foolish decision under the conditions, was the total refusal of Singleton, and his minions, at the SCHSL to completely ignore the common sense solution of just pushing football back until January. That would have solved a lot of problems, and maybe helped the schools financially by increasing these stupidly small crowd sizes that are let in the stadiums.

Agreed. By January we will have a much better idea of how best to approach playing sports and the proper precautions to take. I posted in another thread that Jerome and company should be making plans to cancel the playoffs until after Easter break because it is going to take that long for everyone to play 7 games at this rate.

Wow.... I can't believe this!!!! That is crazy!!!! I thought surely that they would extend the Season. I would almost guarantee that Teams won't test their players now or say if they tested positive or not.

GO BEAUFORT EAGLES!!!!

This is crap.i would bet that almost every high school
has football players that have the virus but show no
signs and have not been tested for the virus.if all the
football players were tested every few days we would
have NO football at all.just my opinion.

As a Newberry fan, I just hope we are able to get back to playing games at some point this season. We had to postpone the Saluda game last Friday, now we are having to postpone the Eau Claire game this week and the Batesburg-Leesville game next week. Unless they push the playoffs back, we don't even have time to make up all 3 of those games.
