Newberry will travel down to Batesburg-Leesville Friday night for a huge region game. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 13-8 win over Saluda, while Batesburg-Leesville is coming off of a 35-6 win over Columbia. The winner will finish 2nd in the region, and will travel to Chesnee for the first round. The loser will be looking to get the at-large birth to make the playoffs.

Congrats on the HUGE win over Saluda last Friday. I would like to see anyone's preseason bracket with Saluda left out. Defending State Champs. Wow is all that I can say. I have Newberry winning in a tough, winner-take-all game.

I didn't make it to the game last week. I had tickets, but had plans I made months ago so I gave them to a friend when they had to move the game. I will be going to Batesburg this week. Talking to a guy that coaches at Saluda before the season, he was worried about everything they had to replace.
The Newberry/Batesburg series is very close. From the SC football history site, we have played each other 52 times, with Newberry holding a 27-24 edge. There have been more games between the 2, I think that site goes back to 1950. I have the records from earlier games, but they are at home somewhere. It seems like every time we play it is a close game. Last year Newberry won 21-20, the year before Newberry won 41-39. The last Batesburg-Leesville win was 21-19 in 2016 in a strange game that had to be played on a Saturday morning at Mid Carolina High School due to construction at Newberry High School's stadium.

I like B-L in this one. The loser of this one may get Abbeville in first round. There was no way Saluda was going to come close to pulling off what they did last year. I'm not talking about them beating Barnwell, Southside Christian, etc. Coming from 18 down to beat us on our home field...may not happen again in a lifetime. Just the truth. This year they are apparently not so good...one year removed from a successful playoff run.

From what I was told this morning, the winner will go to Chesnee and the loser will be the at-large and will travel to Abbeville. I have only been to Chesnee once. 2010 first round of the playoffs, Coach Strickland's first year at Newberry, Chesnee beat Newberry 27-20 in a game I almost froze to death during. 2nd coldest I have ever been at a game, 1st was the Papa John's Bowl in Birmingham when Carolina played UCONN.

I believe Chesnee has a good offense, but, their D gave up 35 to ninety-six. That is not good.

Trust me, I would much rather make the ride up I-26 to I-85 and go to Chesnee than to get on Hwy 34 and come to Abbeville. I know we would still end up making that ride round 2 if we won, but I would like an extra week to our season. A 4 game regular season has sucked.
