Questions about high school football - how about your team?

Post by Rebel-Fan-74 »

This morning, as I sit here drinking my coffee, wondering about what I've seen this season in high school football, question after question has me wondering... two in particular:

SPECIAL TEAM PLAY: Is your team having issues? Byrnes has given up a LOT of points due to special team play. Twice this season, the punter has mishandled the snap (not bad snap, just plain mishandled) and instead of just taking the safety, he's ran out of the endzone right into the waiting arms of several defenders inside the five yard line. Once a bad snap gave the opponents the ball at the shadow of the goal post. Kickoff coverage, well let's just say ALLSTATE would not want to be the sponsor due to the lack of coverage. Is Special Teams just not getting covered in practice time?

OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING: Fort Dorchester had issues with the "boards" against Myrtle Beach and the Rebels never seem to get a play called and snapped unless it is down to 5 or less on the play clock. Looking at the sideline, then looking at the wristbands and then moving around to their positions. Wouldn't it just be easier to send the play in to the huddle with the WR like in the old days? Having the team not huddle was to speed things up, right?
.

I'm thinking about entering the transfer portal!

Special teams has been an issue for us for a while now. We give up a lot of big kick returns.

We huddle, so we don't have an issue with plays getting in. We are old school offense in Newberry, we are going to get in 2 back sets with TE's and run the ball. Sometimes we still get in 3 backs with 2 TE's.

We had the board last night but played with out it.
The issue was it shouldnt be up to venue or varying ref crews .something like that should be nhfs and schl
Ruled no exceptions no deviations.
We went to schl to get a ruling so it doesn't happen again.

Fort will be happy to know the refs came out in Batman capes last night. According to the officials any play that resulted in a first down had to be called back. No matter what team had the ball

That wasnt towards myrtle in anyway .
It didnt matter if it was stall or whom ever .
I felt that was a important issue across the board that needs ti be resolved.
If it is illeagal then we need to chuck it.if it isnt then we have solid ground to stand on.

Judgment calls are Judgment calls we will never agree .
But that was a equipment issue thats my only real complaint thats not a human judgement decision.thats beyond referees thats the powers that be.

All good .
If we would up referee pay maybe we could get some more.
Damn near lose money doing that job and catch crap .
Gotta make it worth it.

some play callers are seeing what the defense is in, then calling the play. Cuts it close

I was at a clinic back when I was coaching, listening to a very successful high school coach talk about his no huddle offense. A coach asked what he did if he saw something in alignment on a play to exploit it the next time. He basically said he goes hurry up, calls the same formation, and the play he has that exploits the weakness he saw. When the coach asking pressed further, the coach said that 99% of the time the defense aligned the exact same way because that's what they have been taught.

There were several times Friday night that the Vikings were staring at the coaches on Defense and we could have run a play and gained big yardage; but we kept staring at the coaches, waiting to see if they wanted to change....

If the defense is not paying attention, how hard is it to snap the ball and hand it to the back who can scamper down the sideline for several yards. Why wait until the defense is set to start the play? Doesn't make sense to me to not take advantage of the defense when they are totally out of place and confused. Just get set, call the snap and go!

When I was calling plays at the middle school level, I played a little game called how many times can I call the same play in a row before they adjust and stop us for no gain. My record was 8 over 2 td drives.
