The Playoffs - how many should get in?

Last season, only the Region Champions and the Runner Ups were in the Playoffs. This season, the brackets released by the SCHSL is back to the standard 4 teams from each Region (in 5A) and a modified version in 4A where they only have 7 Regions. That is 32 teams out of 40 in 5A and 32 teams out of 39 in 4A.
I'm all for allowing teams the opportunity to experience the playoffs; but really, that is only one team from each region not making the playoffs! That seems a little excessive to me.
The NCAA is going through their own version of Playoff questions. Should they stay at 4, move to 12 or what is the right number? Thinking about 12 for the NCAA; this is the bracket that I came up with as of right now. The POWER FIVE champions are automatic bids and the TOP FOUR SEEDS (that get a Bye) must be Conference champions, no runner ups getting byes:
.........…...........1 Alabama
8 Oregon
9 Michigan State
.........…...........4 Cincinnati
5 Georgia
12 Wake Forest
.........…...........2 Iowa
7 Michigan
10 BYU
.........…...........3 Oklahoma
6 Penn State
11 Arkansas
As I was looking at this, I thought 12 for each, UPPER STATE and LOWERSTATE, or a total of 24 sounds much better than 32 teams for each classification. Kind of a compromise between the past season and the plan for this season. Three from each region and the Region Champions getting the BYE. Do we really need the #4 team from Region VI (likely Socastee) to travel to Dutch Fork?
Now the 4A Seeding will still be different in the Lower State due to the fact that they only have 3 Regions... taking all but two teams from each Region gives you the 12, but who gets the extra BYE? 5th place team from Region VI gets in but the #4 from Region V doesn't? Some issues to be discussed and worked out, but they worked them out in both of the other versions 16 and 32 team brackets... last season, the 3 Region Champs, 3 Runner Ups and 2 At Large teams. This season, it's a lot more complicated. Here is the current plan, and maybe you eliminate the #5's and the At Large berths if you go to 12 teams from the Lower State:
Region 5 #1
Region 5 #2
Region 5 #3
Region 5 #4
Region 6 #1
Region 6 #2
Region 6 #3
Region 6 #4
Region 6 #5(eliminate)
Region 7 #1
Region 7 #2
Region 7 #3
Region 7 #4
Region 7 #5(eliminate)
At Large (eliminate)
At Large (eliminate)
But who would get the BYE?

Great post. I'll just say 1st round is usually just a tune up game for most good teams in schsl. Unless someone gets screwed because they had key players out that caused them to lose a region game resulting in them getting a low seed. I guess it is what it is. No excuses.
However, if we do what we did last year and only take the top 2 from each region, you'll have a Greenville team that only lost 1 game not make it. Greenwood kept them out so I ain't crying for them. If I was a Greenville fan I'd be pissed though. That's too strict. So I don't know what the solution is.

I'm not sure, but you should be in charge of it

I suppose you leave it like it is with 4 from each region getting in. True that some of the games, especially 4 vs 1 matchups are meaningless, but it gives them another gate to help with money. Though I do wish they would go back to some type of point system that figures in to balance things a bit. In 3A your have an incredibly weak region, outside of maybe Powdersville, with that region out of Greenville. That regions 2nd place team probably couldn't make the playoffs in say Region 3. There are always team from real strong regions that miss on the playoffs that are much stronger than some that make it from weak regions. That needs to be fixed in some way. But I doubt the SCHSL cares to put any work in to finding that path.

If we have 8 regions, region winner and runner-up. Those 56-0 first round games serve no purpose.

SCHSL controls the gate in playoffs.

IF ELECTED, I PROMISE TO...
Oh wait, wrong answer. I'd volunteer to be on the committee! I love high school football and I'd do what I could to make it even better!

...and the 3 lower state regions are different in size. In this proposal 80% of the teams in region 5 get in but only 57% of region 6 makes the cut. I'm not likin' this too much. I'm pretty sure the #5 team from region 6 this year will be a tough first round opponent.
Using current standings Aiken would make the playoffs, NMB would not.

Exactly what I was saying if you just said all but two from each region... that can't work. It would have to be something where by number of teams it's not equal, but rated by the size of the region percentage wise... I'm thinking:
Region 5 = 3 60%
Region 6 = 4 67%
Region 7 = 4 57%
At Large = 1
With the At Large:
Region 5 = 80%
Region 6 = 83%
Region 7 = 71%
