An interesting theory...

I never noticed this until I was looking through the member list on this site.

The first thing I noticed was that if you look through the member list, one of the things that stood out for me was that members whose screen name had some association for the team that they pulled for seemed to be the members who are more active, indeed a cursory glance seemed to indicate that screen names that seemed arbitrary or at least indicated no team affiliation did not even have a single post to their name.

Then it occurred to me that by and by members active on this board seem to be more inclined to talk more purely about football and their teams and less likely to just chatter and bash talk other teams or members.

So the conclusion I'm weighing in my mind seems ultimately to make a lot of sense. Can you predict how likely a fan is to stick to the topic of football by simply examining their screen name? I don't know. I may be seeing a pattern where there is none which is a psychological tendency I posted about a couple of years ago...

Take a look through the member list and see if you agree.

Your thoughts are an interesting hypothesis. Have you thought about a possible link to the age of the poster and how that age relates to the type of posts? The older the poster, the more football instead of trash.....and.....the knowledge of the game is greater in the older posters? Just a side thought for you to ponder on :-)

He very well might be an outlier but Warpaint is said to be on up in years and is certainly one of the more prolific trashers. By the same token Purple Reign would be considered a youngster. Ultimately though the age of a poster is a much less obvious datum point than their screen name so who knows?

Of note too is the obvious observation that many fans with arbitrary or vague screen names turn out to be quite mature and focused on pure football related discussions. So it might just be random.

I prefer this forum for the reasons you enunciated Decav. I consider myself a football geek, who prefers to read and post about the game of football and not all that other garbage. I was on PFT several years ago but stopped visiting because almost every thread was a joke, only tuned in at the end of the season to see 74's projections. Not a psych major so I've never analyzed things like poster inclinations but i can follow the bread crumbs and agree with you with a few exceptions as you would expect there to be.

I agree with Jacket Fan's thoughts.

I am also a Football Geek. :ugeek:

DeCav, I have also noticed more vitriolic type comments tend to come from those with no team affiliation or a name that doesn't lend itself to any particular team. That is why I liked your idea of assigning teams to each user. :)

Either I should be charging for the "premium content"

or

And this is how I'm leaning... I should be humbled that someone thought enough of me to feel that way!

That right there folks makes the effort seem worthwhile! Thanks!

Byrnes#1 must be the exception to the rule?

Hard to say about Chris. Let's just say that he's predisposed to dealing with haters and referees. :D

But no, I give him credit for being able to talk some good football and if anyone questions his knowledge just look at his pick 'em record, right?

Although curiously, I'm not sure I've seen a single post by him that wasn't either in the Cage or just a pick 'em list.

I think an "Officiating" thread is in order. :ugeek:
