REBEL BOWL Spring Game

Saw a lot of things that I liked, and very happy to see a lot of players dressed out. Still have some that are not completely healed and ready to play, but should be 100% well before Week 0 gets here. Based on what I saw and what I already knew about this group, I can say that I'm looking forward to August.

If we get off to a good start and learn to play together as a team, avoid all the injuries from last year, I can see this team being a team to be playing deep into the playoffs. Injuries decimated the defense (especially the secondary) last year and the RB position. Today, I saw a lot of great plays by multiple RBs and that was a strong positive.

It will be August before we realize it....

Most injuries came during games last , biggest being to stud RB Mack Long! Just seemed that the Rebs could never find their groove after losing him for the year!

I do know that changes were made in the secondary coaching and player wise! They already looked 100% better!

Think what with the talent they had coming back and the new editions this should be a state contender football team!

I don't know if I could go that far, but I do think we could have the possibility a couple of home games when the brackets are played out.

Wait which one is it?
Likeitornot says their a state contender
Rebel fan says he wouldn’t go that far but he could see them playing a couple home games in the playoffs.
Well the only way that happens is if you finish at worst 2nd in your region . If you finish second in that region with the way Spartanburg is coming on , with Gaffney moving in and with an always dangerous Dorman who I think made a great hire. Then you are a state contender in my mind.

What do you think about the Dorman hire? Not sure about that, personally...... defensively, maybe his approach will be okay- at least serviceable in that region. Offensively, not so sure. They would line up and try to shove it down your throat. When he had a big, deep OL he could do that up until they ran into a big, deep, athletic team. They did hire the former AC Flora coach, correct? COVID memory loss...lol

Big, strong, deep, athletic teams....that's every week in that region. Have to wait and see.

Well a couple of things there. True his style of offense might not translate but then again if you can do that at FLORA and win a title there , then what can you do at Dorman with their depth and talent and facilities. He may have ran that offense because it was based around the talent he had.
I know defensively they got after it .Really both DF and Gaffney last year were heavy run teams and were at their best when doing so. And honestly if you ask most Dorman fans even though Gutshall built the program and did win some titles they would probably agree that there were a lot of years that Dorman underwhelmed.
That place should be a Giant and really it’s been sleeping as of late . A fresh young coach with a culture change is needed every once in awhile or things get stale. I’d give him two years before passing any judgement but I liked the hire and when you here the guy interview he’s got that energy that you look for in a coach.

Gutshall was a stud- have to give the devil his due. The year Flora did it...SP was down...they had one, maybe two teams outside of SP to worry about in 4A (there are 3 in that region alone that can be world beaters in 5A)....CR and SP were about it and again SP was down in 4A that year. DF went to Rock Hill with some key injuries, including Green and did whatever they wanted with out opening it up on SP. Maybe some new blood will get Dorman excited. At the end of the day in 5A offensively, you can't be a one trick pony. Balance is the key. Yes DF was at their best when they ran the ball well, but you knew the pass was there and it was coming...Irby, Thompson, Zirke, Hyatt, Spencer, Lil Hyatt, Williams(Power 5/D1 talent) at WR....best WR corps in the state for a long time...yes Hoff, Hall and Green were the workhorses running the ball but you knew the pass was coming. Same with Gaffney, Dorman, Byrnes, Fort D...they could all throw the ball well.

"New and Young" is never any guarantee of innovation and creativity. Maybe, but in that region...if he uses the standard Flora offensive playbook it will be a learning experience for him...it will be regardless. That region is murderers row. It's going to be fun to watch.

The Talent level IMHO is a state contender! Think Coach Shaw knows that this group may need to be playing at least Black Friday for him to remain HC.
