Should we upgrade this forum to phpbb version 3.1 ?

I was doing a backup of the forum and I noticed the big, red warning that our software is out of date. We are currently running phpbb version 3.0.12. An update to .13 is available, and they've released 3 patches (Patch level 1) to fix some additional bugs that popped up. The current version of 3.0 is now 3.0.13-PL1.
I was about to ask Cralic to install the updates but I now see we have a bigger question. The next generation of phpbb software was released in October. They're up to 3.1.3 and it appears that the development teams are all now focused on 3.1.
I don't know what features and benefits the new version offers. I plan on looking at it as soon as I post this. It shouldn't be too hard to upgrade since we only have one Mod installed in our current version: Red Blinking PM. I'm hopeful that is a native feature in 3.1 or that a similar extension has been made available. "Mods" have been replaced with "Extensions" in the new version. We're also running the "add on" Cometchat software. I have no idea if it will work with 3.1, we may have to buy a new version of Cometchat software to work with the new forum softwate.
