Grading Summerville Mid Season

Post by GoBigGreen »

Coming into the season I had high hopes for what I thought was going to be a solid team. However 6 games in we are 2-4 with performances from week to week that really make you scratch your head. Offensively we sputtered for the first two games of the season and them seemed to get on track putting 70 points on Berkeley, 21 against a GC team that had not been beaten locally in over 5 years and then 49 against Wando. We then follow it up with the strangest performance I can recall offensively against WA. We completely go away from what was working in the previous 3 games. We stop throwing the ball to one of the best WRs in the state, #13 Cameron Burnette, or #9 Jackson who had combined for over 250 receiving yards just last week. We did not even look in Burnette's direction until very late in the first half. We replaced what was working with a predominantly rushing attack which we tried to utilize in the Providence game. I believe the only team Providence has beat all year is Summerville. Our OC is just not getting it done. He is not making adjustments during the game or after half. There is no reason with the weapons we have on offense that we are not putting 40 points on the board each week against the defenses we have been seeing. My grade: Offense D (last Friday F).

Defensively we are just not very good. We have not really stopped many teams all year. In my opinion(and those of many others) we do not have the right personnel on the field. We should be rotating players in to see if improvements can be made. If the same player is repeatedly making the same mistake then let someone else give it a shot. During the game if DBs are playing 12 yards off the line and the opposition is repeatedly making the quick out pass and picking up 6-8 yards whenever they want it, make an adjustment. It is just frustrating to see a team run the same play over and over and over and repeatedly gain big yards on us without doing anything about it. Defense D-.

Special teams has traditionally been a strength of Summervilles. However this year that is not the case. We struggled early on missing our first 3 PATs before substituting another kicker in who has been more reliable. I believe on the season he has missed two which one was blocked last week. We however do not have anyone who can reliably make FGs from any distance. On kickoffs we have been pouch kicking it with the average starting field position probably around the 35 yard line. We just do not have a kicker who can get it to the end zone so opt to pouch kick it instead. On punts we have to use a running rugby style kick and just try to keep it away from the return man. Because of the low line drive type kicks if the returner gets his hands on the ball it is usually not a good thing for Summerville. Special Teams D (we did find a PAT kicker)

In my opinion coaching has been the most disappointing aspect of our team. We have no excuse on offense except poor coaching by our OC for the performances this year. Defensively we are not as talented but we have 50 kids standing on the sidelines who are not getting a chance to step on the field. And if the defensive scheme for a game is not working do your job and make adjustments. I want to support Coach Call but ultimately all of this falls on his shoulders. If he does not step in and address these issues then I think we all know he has about 5 games remaining as the coach of The Summerville Greenwave. Coaching D- (we did win 2 games and one of those games was GC

1998 was our last championship and our fans have waited long enough for another championship. Chuck Reedy proved at Goose Creek that with the proper coaching state titles are not only possible but likely. Summerville is the 3rd largest school in the state. We have the talent. We have the support. Lets fix this and get back to playing Greenwave football.

I totally agree with your assessment.
With the talent on this team 2-4 is unacceptable. Especially when they should be 4-2 at worse. I would love to see Call succeed but if this team doesn't get to the second round of the playoffs then it should be clean house time.

Great post. Thanks for the assessment.

I don't know if you'd call it irony or not...

...your team runs the same plays over and over again unsuccessfully while the other team does the same with the opposite result.

We've seen it over and over, "You never want to be the one to follow the legend!"

You want to be the one who followed the legend. The only way that this guy would have been successful would be 6-0 and even then, "Well, it was on cruise control from Big John!"

But anyone who knows football knows that Summerville (EVEN WITH BIG JOHN) hadn't been "dominant" in several years. The new coach, the interim or someone entirely new, will need time to install his system and his style. Many folks forget that in Bobby Bentley's third season, they were calls that we need a change!!!! Not much was mentioned after season four about "change".

I don't know the interim, don't know about how much of a change he wants and needs to make, but when you look back, when was the last time Summerville was in Williams-Brice? Wasn't it A J Green and the loss to the Rebels? And A J is playing on Sunday's now so I'm thinking that team rode the back of a superstar as far as they could take him...

If the interim is just more of the same from the past five seasons, maybe a full fledged hiring process wouldn't be a bad thing if they open it up to all comers..... I'm sure there would be some interest among some good proven coaches. Charleston just down the road, Folly Beach, Perfectly Franks, and beautiful stadium there at John McKissick field..... well 3 out of 4.

LOL R74...I prefer the Isle of Palms over Folly Beach as well . I believe you are correct on AJ. We lost 48 - 9 to Byrnes in 2007.

I won't comment on what I have heard or what is going on internally, but I will say that the kids seem to be paying the price for the supposed Adults ego! I have been a supporter of Coach Call from the beginning, but at some point he has to step in and do something about our O.C.! Every thing that has supposedly happened, from running kids off, to players questioning the leadership, to poor play calling is all centered around the same guy! We have a new QB who has improved every week, but our O.C. seems to intentionally put him in unwinnable situations. I have heard that the QB is a little hard to coach, but its the coaches job to fix that, not cost our team a game in order to prove a point to the kid! Like GBG said, we have one of the best WR's in the state, who I might add is not hard to coach and from everything I hear bleeds Green and Gold, but we basically have isolated him out of the offense because he somehow doesn't fit the scheme our new O.C. wants. I always thought it was a coaches job to fit a scheme around his players, not force a scheme on players that doesn't fit. I have also heard that players are considering transferring after the season. I hope this is not the case even though I know we have lost a few like that lately. The QB Taylor may go, Don't really know him well enough to have an opinion, but I doubt Burnette leaves. The kid has been in the program forever and is a Summerville Guy. Then again if the O.C. doesn't change then all bets are off!!!!!

Where is the LIKE button ? I completely agree mrfootball4life. Looking forward to the game Friday at Stratford just hoping to see improvements, even if we lose. I am still the glass half full guy and still have hope that we can pull out 2 region games and limp into the playoffs. That is my heart talking. My mind is laughing at my heart right now however. Hang on a second..."Stop that mind, leave poor little heart alone as he doesn't have a brain". Anyway I am back. Come on Friday!!!

I tried to send you a message on the other board Wavefan70, but that thing has been crazy so I don't know if you ever got it or not. Just to be clear, I didn't get that information from kids, got it from adults. I wont go into details in the public forum, but some things I've heard is almost unbelievable! What I will say is that The Wave are in need of a win, and I hope we get it Friday, but I'm not as optimistic as GBG lol. I wont be at the game but i will be checking scorestream often  ! I just hope we get things resolved and resolved quickly, and I hope that we don't let one guy make us not only lose the season, but lose some good kids, and ultimately lose our head coach.

This is the same person that was at Fort (Had trouble there), Came to Summerville and left to be the next great coach at a local private school (Had trouble there), went to Cane Bay and was part of the 0-11 season and now back at Summerville??? I also heard a rumor and I will say its a rumor that he has made the statement when the QB did not leave AR to come over to Summerville he would make sure that the younger brother of the QB would never play in the town of Summerville (Something along that line) Heard that he has made other statements to his own players or former players now too...Again this is second hand info, but I also understand this same person is the reason some players have left too. I have heard he believes he should be the HC now and believes he can work his way into that position. In the last few weeks things sure have gotten interested in the town...Then again Summerville begins to win and things will calm down.
