Truly historical upsets

Post by Dave Pickren »

We hear it every week, on any given night, any team can beat any other team.
We that follow SC HS football know that is not true. There are very very few games are that are truly upsets.
I am not talking about a game like last year where Spartanburg beat Dorman in an upset win. Spartanburg is/was good and while the underdog won, it was not a true head scratching upset win for the Vikings. They were capable and they delivered.

Last night we saw one. On paper the Vikings should have won by 4 or so touchdowns. Boiling Springs is average at best and honestly a poor team when the entire season thus far is evaluated. Still they were better last night and won in convincing fashion.

We were talking after the upset and trying to remember the last time there was a true major upset in 4A football. They are few and far between. Any ideas ??

I can only speak for the Indians.. but last year against Northwestern.. our team wasn't expected to win by not a single person in this state.... a couple years ago, eventual State Champion Gaffney team lost to Wade Hampton and the straw broke the Camel's back in 2012.. Shaq Davidson was moved to quarterback and the rest is history... it's all about what you do with the loss.

I was thinking the same thing about the Wade Hampton game. The thing about that game is that it didn't seem that much of an upset when it happened...not as much as it did after Gaffney grabbed the title. I believe they also knocked Byrnes out of the playoffs that year, right?

i think the last one was Byrnes over Gaffney in the 2011 state game....had gaffney won that game they would have been considered one the state's best ever.. that last night still is still debatable imo..if BS were to beat Dorman, some might realize the Dawgs have a pretty good squad that took some lumps early...

I think it was 1972 and Spartanburg was the #1 team in the state, #1 in AAAA and little AAA Byrnes came into Snyder Field as a 48 point underdog (I had the Rebels and 48 points on the parley card my uncle got for me).

The Rebels won and the Herald always had the Vikings on page 1 above the fold.... not that morning. Page 5 small letters.... GOWAN RUNS WILD AS REBELS WIN.

Didn't even tell you who they beat.

Another upset was 1997. Byrnes over Spartanburg at Gibbs. SHS had won 3 Big 16 titles in a row and Byrnes has won 3 games total the two years before. We had no chance, then Mike Wannamaker went down and Byrnes wins in OT. Bobby has mentioned before that win was the win that really took the program up a few notches.

If that was in the rain, I was running the video for Bobby on that game..

in 1970 WREN HURRICANES came to 96 with a 9-0 record.
their defense had gave up 35 points in those 9 games.
my WILDCATS won the game 12-10 .that was a major
upset back then.that is and was the best defensive
game I have ever seen my WILDCATS play.

Correct. Rained like crazy in the first half, cold as a well digger's tail in the second half. One of the Wright brothers scored in ot, we won 31-25.
