Dorman............3...0
Byrnes.............1...1
Spartanburg......1...1
Gaffney...........1...1
Boiling Springs...0...3
Remaining Games:
Byrnes -vs- Gaffney
Spartanburg -vs- Boiling Springs
Dorman -vs- Byrnes
Gaffney -vs Spartanburg
We could be all wrapped up by late Friday night, or we could be set up for a tiebreaker at the top, or the bottom, or somewhere in between.
I can't cover every single possibility, but here are just a couple.
Byrnes - with two wins could be Region Champ or Region Runner Up or Third Place
If they win both remaining games, they will be tied with Dorman for sure, but Spartanburg could be at 3-1 as well. If it is just Byrnes and Dorman at 3-1, then the Rebels win the Region due to head to head over Dorman. If all three are tied, it goes to the Gushall Rule, point differential at the end of the third quarter of games between the tied teams.
The Vikings were up by 7 against the Rebels and up by 1 against the Cavs, so they are at +8
The Rebels are at -7 so they would need to be up on Dorman by 16 points to win the tiebreaker
The Cavs are at -1 so they would need to be up by 9 points on Byrnes
A Rebel loss to the Indians means the Cavs are Region Champions no matter what happens next week as they own head to head over Spartanburg and Gaffney.
A Bulldog loss and the Rebels are in the playoffs, as well as the Indians and the Vikings.
If you thought the Vikings are locked in, you are incorrect. If the Vikings lose to Boiling Springs and Gaffney, the fall to 1-3 and lose the tiebreaker to the Bulldogs, so they are not a lock yet. The only lock is Dorman.
Should Byrnes lose both remaining games and end up 1-3 with a Spartanburg loss to Boiling Springs and Gaffney, all three teams are 1-3 and you go to the tiebreaker. Byrnes was losing to Spartanburg by 7 at the end of the 3rd and leading by 2?? {not sure that is the correct number} to the Bulldogs so they would be at -5. So it would depend on the score at the end of the 3rd quarter of the Viking - Bulldog game.
WOW, and we've only scratched the surface. The most likely outcome, you ask? Are you kidding? It's high school football, who knows?
Let's look at a couple other Regions... ah an easy one. Region One Westside is preparing for a showdown with T L Hanna already due to a BYE week and T L Hanna must dispose of J L Mann {almost a BYE week} before the big game next week. Winner is Region Champion, pure and simple.
Region Two could be a mess as well. If Greenwood had held on for a few more minutes, it would all be just a formality. Now, Greenwood should beat Riverside and Laurens to get to the finish line at 4-1 while Mauldin, at 2-1 has Laurens before setting up the big game against Hillcrest, who is in the driver's seat at 3-0 with Wade Hamption this week. If they all win this week, Golden Strip Rivalry Part II will determine Region Champion or put it in a 3 way tie and I have no idea how they break their ties. Oh, wait, I almost forgot.... a 2-1 Laurens could beat Greenwood and Mauldin and make those tiebreakers all favor Hillcrest. Clear as mud?
Region Four has Rock Hill and Northwestern at 2-0 and should Rock Hill take care of Clover and Northwestern take care of Nation Ford; they would meet with the Region Title on the line with no tiebreakers to worry about at the top. How long has it been since those two met in the final game of the season with the title on the line? It used to happen a lot....
Lower State at a glance:
Region 5 - Spring Valley and Dutch Fork should settle things this week
Region 6 - Sumter and Conway can either settle the Region or set up a huge game next week with Conway and Carolina Forest. A win by Sumter and it is all but over, while a Conway win would send a 4-0 Conway to a possible 3-1 Carolina Forest should they win over West Florence. Hey we all thought Sumter would beat CF by 21 last week, but it didn't work out quite that way. Sumter win this week and all they would need would be a win over Socastee.
Region 7 - Fort Dorchester. Enough said!
OK, here is my projection:
Region One - T L Hanna {yeah, really stepping out there ain't I?}
Region Two - Hillcrest
Region Three - Dorman
Region Four - Northwestern
Region Five - Dutch Valley {OK, I'm not sure, but Dutch Fork}
Region Six - Conway {I'm not changing horses in mid-stream}
Region Seven - ???? Let me get back to you on that one
