This is every season. Then they get to varsity and underperform. Like I said. It isn't the talent.96fanatic wrote:on the bright side.the GREENWOOD JV are 5-0

The JV squad was good the last two years. No excuse. I

Nah man. not a lack of talent. there have been dips in talent due to graduation but even then we didn't lose to the likes of easley and westside..... it's comical really. Pippin does not have a championship mentality and it's rubbed off on the players. Maybe he is a good coach but just not the right guy for the Greenwood job.Newcatntown wrote:NICE ASSESSMENT!!bbrown1240 wrote:I actually think Dan Pippin is a good coach. If people are saying that he is not, then they are saying that his success at North Augusta was due to the talent at North Augusta, which would further mean that maybe...just maybe that Greenwood may be on a dry run of great talent right now. Heck even Byrnes had a 3 win season not too long ago. Look at Spartanburg this year. We went through this in Sumter in 2010-2012. Sometimes it’s a combination of both. Maybe Pippin is not the right fit. But just be mindful...coaches don’t miss tackles, miss blocking assignments, throw interceptions, or drop passes. Players have to take some of the blame here. I don’t mind calling out Sumter’s players if they don’t play well. But tradition never dies. Greenwood is going to be just fine.
And sometimes, a school has to fork up the money for a great coach. We pay Mark Barnes over $90,000 just to coach football...no AD or teaching responsibilities.

Coach Nickles actually applied for the Greenwood job back when Pippin put in for it. They selected Pippin instead because of his resume' and the wanted someone outside. Liner, Porter and Strickland put in for it too.northside knight wrote:Man that's coldEmeraldCityEagle98 wrote:Weight lifting starts in January so we need to have the new coach in by 2nd semester. He's really got it rolling down in Abbeville. Obviously Pippin hasn't been fired yet but after the last two weeks I wouldn't be surprised. We need a coach that runs smash mouth. Traditionally Greenwood has never really had the right personnel to run a spread offense. That's why Cathcart changed it and look what happened....3 state title appearances in a row. Pippins issue is he refuses to change anything no matter what happens.

Exactly. Actually Nickles applied when Pippin did. They turned him down along with Strickland and Porter. All the coaches Pippin beat out have won at least 1 state title.northside knight wrote:Man that's coldEmeraldCityEagle98 wrote:Weight lifting starts in January so we need to have the new coach in by 2nd semester. Re: Westside at Greenwood
I didn’t say Greenwood doesn’t have talent....in fact let’s take talent out of the equation.
As a former player and middle school/high school coach, the players play a big part in getting it done on the field. They go through film study. They go through practice. They play the game. During the course of the game, players know what’s coming better the coaches do. Sometimes a player has to say dang what the coach calls, and go make a play if you get the look you want. Coaches don’t put players in bad positions every play. There may be some plays in which a coach makes a bad play call, even gets out coached some games, but there are also times where players just don’t play well. Sometimes it’s coaching...sometimes it’s the player.
Greenwood’s losses weren’t to bad teams. Easley is a decent football team. Should you have beaten them...yes. Westside will always play tough with Scott Earley coaching them. Hanna and Gaffney are championship contenders.
Pippin’s philosophies have worked elsewhere. He comes to a school where he should now have more athletes...championship caliber athletes...and all of a sudden it’s not working...I’m having a time trying to figure that one out. As someone on the outside looking in, I don’t think he is doing a bad job.
If a coaching change is indeed needed, coaches who won state titles are hard to come by. I’m not sure if that should be a requirement. Two good up and coming coaches waiting for big time jobs are Perry Parks and Rodney Summers. Maybe pluck Dr. Jerry Brown from Wade Hampton. He has had success everywhere he has went. Maybe the Wing T/option offense is more fit for Greenwood’s athletes. If that’s the case, maybe they think about Robin Bacon from Spring Valley. He is the only one in the midlands that’s had a snowball’s chance at competing with Dutch Fork the past couple of years.
But at the end of the day, y’all know Greenwood football better than I do. I’ll get back in my lane now lol...but I’ll do so with this thought. This is high school football. The main reason I don’t advocate for a coaches firing on the high school level is because of why they are there in the first place. This game that we all love is teaching the kids life lessons that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. A lot of them will also become coaches because they remember what they learned from playing high school football and the coaches who coached them. That is why people become coaches. They don’t do it for us...they do it for the kids. We may not like their ways all the time but remember why they are there in the first place...and I guarantee you it’s not to win football games.
