GREAT BUT SAD READ !
WE HAD A THREAD ABOUT THIS I BELIEVE LAST YEAR.....OR EARLIER THIS YEAR...PEOPLE HAVE OTHER AGENDAS THESE DAYS.
NOT ME...IM A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL JUNKIE!!!!
At the beginning of the Dorman Greenwood game on Thursday night, I counted 73 people on the GWood side. I would estimate MAYBE 1500 on the Dorman side.
It started raining at halftime and Dorman was up 35 zip so we left. Based on highlights on TV I doubt there were 100 people there when the game ended with a running clock.
Do you know how empty that place looks with 1500 people in a stadium that large? Granted Thursday night game, rain in the forecast, Panthers on TV and a lousy opponent, but the attendance did not cover the cost of turning on the lights and paying the security.
I don't understand how people can not be jacked up about sumter they are undefeated and are doing very well this year if that was Gaffney i would almost bet my pay for a year that the stands would be packed every week and that we would pack out every visitor side there was and make it a home game for Gaffney
Now speaking about the other agenda yes people of today don't see the town high school football on Friday night as something to do or something to support like it was 5 or so years ago. If the majority of the people do go they go to be seen and talk to friends instead of screaming and hollering for the team on the field or they are there cause their kids wanted to go and then they get to the game and the kids leave them in the stands and go hang with friends or go sit with friends and act like a bunch of hoodlums and kick people in the back and make watching the game miserable cause the parents don't know how to control their kids
Attendance in general has been down for alot of teams. Our first game vs glynn academy in Georgia we didnt have many fans, nor did the band travel. Hell the director we have since 2015 season didnt travel to alot of away games even locally. But as far as the fans, we had a ton of fans when we played in the Erk Russell classic in Georgia. At goose creek we didnt have much. Its a lot different now. These kids need the support they put in hard work day in day out all summer
It is like this everywhere, it really sickens me to see. When Union played Newberry for the region championship this year there was practically nobody in the home stands. Now we traveled pretty well to Newberry but the home side being so dead made for a pretty crappy atmosphere.
I hate to say it for Sumter, but they will be a lot of gray and blue there Friday night and Byrnes will probably out number them. Duncan is itching for Byrnes to get back to the top and a win Friday would be a huge step in that direction.
Here's some of the issues.
Traffic is terrible... For fans trying to get to the out of town games... could take 4 hours one way.
And a tank of gas to go round trip. Hell it took some of the Wave fans 4 hours to get into the fort a couple of weeks ago and they
Missed the 1st qtr. We're talking 2 schools maybe 10 miles apart. And the last 2 years going to Dutch fork on I-26 was a nightmare.
Secondly , $8.00 a head when you have a family is getting way to costly .
Third, safety concerns...is it safe to go to a strange environment in this day and age....
Honestly we just got a respectable student section back this year. Even though these players deserve to have the home side filled, it doesn’t affect the players at all. They’ll just go play football like they have done all year.
