What teams run the Wishbone in SC????

Post by Newcatntown »

It was the offense back in my youth...70’s 80’s....ECU ran it to perfection racking up 300-400-500 yards a game...but they didn’t have a Defense.

Central did, really not sure if they still do. Hopefully I will be able to see them this year to find out.

Right on man...long time no talk to CAV....good to hear ya!! I just think that if the right team changed gears and ran it....that teams would have a hard time with it...especially if you modified it with a few more passes than they threw it years ago!

How ya'll doing Cav? Newcat?

I agree - I think with today's players basically having no idea of how to defend it; it would be just as effective as when Oklahoma was beating people with it. Lighter quicker defenses built to stop the spread would probably struggle with it.

Of course, you can't get behind if you run it. Unless as you suggested, "you don't act like the forward pass is some last ditch effort play"! If you pass it enough to be efficient and pass it enough so that if you had to; you could call on it to get a quick score or late TD with confidence - you can still run the WB.

70% - wishbone
30% - air raid

Literally, you practice the Air Raid when you have your team practicing your passing game. The rest you perfect the WB offense. Someone is saying, "how will your QB get enough reps"? Well just like the QB's do now! In practice, 7 on 7, etc. Remember back in the day they kind of just did it as a way to keep the defense honest(pass the ball). It wasn't "this is a weapon we are going to use to make our wishbone more effective mentality"!
And, you had better have a strong defense! Wishbone and double wing defenses usually have good stats b/c they don't defend as many plays. But, it could be done and done at a high level if a coach had knowledge enough of both systems(air raid and wishbone)!

p.s. air raid plays would be intermediate and sometimes on obvious run downs - just so the defense can't ever get comfortable.
Choose to Lead or you should choose to "get out the way" of those who will lead!

I'm doing fair. Hope y'all are as well. I know it's not SC, but does that team out in California that Byrnes has played run it? I don't recall their name, but they are always top ranked. I remember they run the ball alot. I just don't recall their scheme.

Hey 5th...what’s happening man? We need to get together at NAFO game and talk some football. Tell that Beaufort coach of yours to try the BONE.... I like your take on the bone.

The Wishbone offense has been replaced at nearly all levels with the 'Double Wing", or more commonly called "Wing T" offense. It is much easier to pass out of the Wing T than the the Wishbone. Although both are triple option running offenses, the passing option provided by the Wing T offers up more options for play calling. Defensive speed and superior linebacker play is required to hold down either of these offensive schemes. The offensive line zone "cut blocking" is also much easier to teach to High School kids. These offenses are typically run by teams who do not have the abundance of more skilled athletes required to run more sophisticated offensive sets.
