Re: Greenwood AD, football coach Dan Pippin to leave after 2
Top 3 candidate to me are Jamie Nickles, Tony Temple, and Chris Liner.

It should start, and stop, with Nickles until he absolutely says no about 10 times. After that, don't get hung up on somebody having Greenwood ties. Being a winner is more important than heritage.

Once again you sleep on the best builder of programs available and they absolutely spanked you. You have delusions of grandeur. You need to go after a proven winner and builder.
Btw, Nickles to Emerald!

Why would Jamie Nickles leave Abbeville when he has won 6 out of the last 9 State Championships and will probably win #7 this year. He is the winningest coach in Abbeville history and is not far from retirement. He really doesn’t need the frustration of rebuilding a program at this point in his career unless he is just looking for a challenge which I don’t think would be the case.
Someone has already mentioned the OC at Gaffney who has been apart of a high pressure community that has high expectations and demands for excellence. The OC at Fort Dorchester is another excellent choice who has been a part of a winning program that has been a part of AAAAA and won a State Championship in the last 5 years.

I've kept quiet so far with all the Nickles talk but will chime in.Damefan wrote:Why would Jamie Nickles leave Abbeville when he has won 6 out of the last 9 State Championships and will probably win #7 this year. Only reason to go would be a pay raise. Other than that, I see zero incentive/reason for Coach Nickles to make the move to Greenwood. That program will need a significant rebuild that will probably take a couple years and I don't know if he would want that undertaking, especially at AAAAA level. People should remember that Abbeville is a unique situation. We run the specialized A-Bone offense that is taught to players from a young age the rec level. I don't know if Abbeville system and way of doing things would work at a school like Greenwood. Also, if Greenwood is looking for someone to be Head Coach and AD I don't think Nickles would want to be the AD. Personally, I think Greenwood needs to go with someone who has had success at the AAAAA/AAAA level. Regardless of who Greenwood hires, Eagles fans shouldn't expect miracles in year one. It will take some time.

Really? The OC at Gaffney? Go tell the Gaffney folks. Am sure they would probably raise some money to pad Greenwoods offer to get someone to take him off of their hands.Damefan wrote:Why would Jamie Nickles leave Abbeville when he has won 6 out of the last 9 State Championships and will probably win #7 this year. And it finally comes out. Nickles to emerald.... In your dreams! The only program Nickles would go to in Greenwood county is Greenwood. There's a reason for thatMrFootball68 wrote:Once again you sleep on the best builder of programs available and they absolutely spanked you. You have delusions of grandeur. Couldn't disagree more. Gene Cathcart ran a similar style and got us to the state title his first year running that style of offense. He ran the spread his first year (my senior year) and still won 9 games and lost to the eventual state champion Berkeley 13-9. If Nickles is bored at Abbeville and wants a challenge he'll come. The Greenwood program is NOT a rebuild. These kids are talented and Pippin just has them in the wrong positions and doesn't put them in position to be successful in games. If Nickles comes I guarantee Greenwood will challenge for the region title and make a deep playoff run his first year. Abbeville folks probably don't want to hear that but y'all don't need him as y'all have always been successful before Nickles. Well, and another thing. Coach Nickles is close to retiring age and is probably too "old" for a challenge. One of his sons is on the Abbeville JV team and that might also prevent him from jumping programs. Just my opinions. We'll see how this all shakes out. Also, don't see how you can be "bored" winning state title after state title and having constant success, something the current kids at Greenwood know nothing about, despite delusional Greenwood fans saying they would be "so much better" this year. I wouldn't put all your eggs into the Coach Nickles basket. This will be my last post on this subject. Good luck to whoever the next Greenwood coach is, they'll need it.northside knight wrote:Couldn't disagree more. Nobody in Greenwood is delusional. We go to the games and know what we see and what it is. Coach Pippin is a nice guy but does not have what it takes to win a title at this level. I for one hope we go out of state and bring in a big time coach from North Carolina or Georgia. We have the money and need to use it. The reason we haven't had success in years rest solely and squarely on the shoulders of Dan Pippin. The only other coach who couldn't win at Greenwood was Mike Martin and he tried to take the G off the helmets. All we need is a coach who knows what they are doing and it'll turn around quickly.
