Re: Worst 5A programs
Riverside was bad when I was in school at Newberry. I remember the final score being 63-14 and we could have scored 100 on them. Their baseball program on the other hand was amazing.

The Stall QB is very impressive...if he played at another 5aaaaa school he would probably be all state.Fortfor5 wrote:Stall probably would do better if they were in thier correct classification.1400 students. Realistically though they haven5 cared or wont put the recources in to compete.early 80s late 70slast time i saw a good team from them.

If stall had better culture they would be fine. They do have a C team and the players do look athletic. Stall has athletes

Mickey Crocker and Brian Strickland do not look too bad now.
WH will improve if the Admin. will let the coach have what he needs.
Riverside appealing to play an independent schedule will have major repercussions. If this happens then the lunatics will run the asylum.
Stall is way over their head and Charleston County does not help them too much.
Socastee has another bad run of non athletes.
Heck- St James is successful when they win 3!
Fort Mill was hurt by the new school.
As far as Mann, didnt Strickland succeed Crocker? That is when their downfall started.
WH should be better because they usually have size, and seem to have athletes. Are they going to threaten Byrnes and Dorman? No. But should be better than they are. Dont know about administrative support, but that they hired another basketball coach to be AD tells you where put their focus.
Ft Mill -- The new school will have an effect on them as the years go along. Nations Ford as well. Bottom line is that just because of the makeup of the Ft Mill area, they dont have much talent. It all lives in Rock Hill

Does Mann have any success in the other male sports?

Re: Worst 5A programs
Mann is decent. We’re in Lancaster county so don’t hear much.
FM and NF really only lost at 200 students each to the new school and with the growth their numbers are nearly the same as last year.
Our own Indian Land HS is exploding too, we’ll probably be 4A.
Even with over 2000 kids FM and NF dropped 9th grade football. Sad for a 5A program. FM will have 2 wins in 2 years and score less than 100 points all season.
Lancaster is on a roller coaster. Loses to FM then beats NF and plays SP tough for a half.

Re: Worst 5A programs
Mann just won a 5A state title in Boys Swimming Monday night if that gives you any indication as to what sports are the focus at the JL. in 2019 Mann saw both Girls soccer win a state title and Boys soccer play for a state title. Their baseball, lax and cross country teams are always state contenders as well. Ironically??? they are tragic at golf. They do however have one of the best overall athletic programs in 5A every year so why no football success??? JL has the same $$$$ that they have over on Vardy Street in downtwn Gville and the same athletes BUT has not been relevant in football since they were 3A in a 4 class system.coachp wrote:Does Mann have any success in the other male sports?
WH's athletic programs are the definition of mediocre. Making the playoffs regardless of sport is good enough and pretty much their MO.
Riverside - if its not swimming or lax (and some other spring sports) then its just a club team over there. Riverside who use to OWN 3A sports when they were in 3A in the old 4 class system has begun to see their sports programs take a nose dive.
One issue not being discussed in regards to WH and Riverside is the proximity to Eastside who is 4A. Eastside who in the last half decade all of a sudden became "good" as far as Gville County schools are concerned and has become an athletic giant in almost all facets of sports. No longer just a wrestling school Eastside has become pretty legit in 4A across the board. Doesn't hurt that Eastside is one of if not the largest 4A school in the state. Will be interesting to see how the 45 day count impacts that and if the Eagles move up to 5A next year.
Re: Worst 5A programs
Eastside made a concentrated effort to get better in football. And it wasnt administration. GC schools historically lag behind in support for their football programs. But Eastside finally had a group of supporters that demanded better. They have raised a bunch of money to fund all that is needed. And those folks were responsible for luring Steve Wilson to Eastside. And he was the man that turned the program around. Luckily, the two coaches that followed have had that same support.
Riverside had success when they were one of the largest 3A schools when the Frost boys were there, but otherwise haven't had any real success since the Mike Hawkins days.
