Based on the Dist 50 website it appears they are going to split the job of Athletic Director and Football Coach. Could it be that the new AD will be tasked with hiring the next Coach? Closing date for the applications is November 8th. There is no mention of a Football Coach in the job description but does have this line in it.
"Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members."

If I had to put money on it, the next HC at Greenwood will be their AD as well but we shall see. It's a much more enticing job with the AD pay attached to it.
District 50 made a lot of changes behind the scenes. Emerald has a new principal this year, hopefully gearing up for some changes over there too.

Cathcart coming back?

Schools are starting to split the positions up to lower the over pay situations that have come to past the last several years. Irmo was the first real Major AAAAA school to do it recently and more schools districts are going to district Athletic Directors like former River Bluff Head Football Coach and AD David Bennett. He has been serving as the Lexington County School District 1 Athletic Director for 3 years. He oversees the sporting lives of close to 27,000 students and over 600 coaches at 30 elementary, middle and high schools. This is similar to what Bobby Bentley was doing up in Spartanburg before he left the second time.

Some of the bigger school districts have gone with a district AD. Lexington One with Bennett, and I know Greenville County has had one for over a decade. But those are district positions that I guess sets up instruction for coaches, cuts district wide deals with vendors, and supports all sports program from a district standpoint. But it doesnt replace an AD in every high school. They all still have their own. I guess Bentley sort of had the same position in Duncan, but think it was more a reaction to them needing to find a high paying place to stick him when he decided he wanted to get out at PC. A district that small doesnt really need one. But they can take care a lot of the paperwork and purchasing duties off the individual AD's.Damefan wrote:Schools are starting to split the positions up to lower the over pay situations that have come to past the last several years. I totally agree with you but I does eliminate the need to play an athletic director 90-100,000 when they can pay him closer to what an Asst Athletic Director makes. It is like when you hire somebody with a PHd. The Principal then has to also make $1 dollar more than that person in many counties (not going to say all because I am not familiar with all county contracts). Then when the PHd level person leaves the salary goes back down. Principals hate that. Same goes with Coaches pay, if you have coach X making $100,000 then the next coach coming in will expect to make that or more. Schools can't be run like colleges.

But you almost have to have an AD in every high school. The district guys have the big picture. Ordering what they can for the district as a whole. Making sure maintenance issues are taken care of, representing the district at certain functions. But have yo have one at the individual schools to handle the endless paperwork in regards to physicals, etc., to keep all athletes eligible. Has to schedule buses for transportstion, and somebody has to be there to settle disputes amongst coaches, players, and even the unhinged parent.
